Demand for AMD CPUs surges as crypto mining rises from the ashes

Mining some coins became profitable again.

Anyone that was in the market for a GPU in the period from 2020 to 2022 would remember the ridiculous prices caused by demand from miners. Among other reasons related to the pandemic, GPUs were particularly strong at Ethereum mining, leading to shortages of graphics cards. Thankfully that came to an end in September 2022, but now that we're well into 2024, are we seeing a new mining crunch? This one's in the form of CPUs, specifically, the AMD Ryzen variety.

An analysis by Wccftech looks at the mining profitability of several proof of work (PoW) coins that perform best on CPUs. Mining profitability has surged on the back of Bitcoin's new all-time highs. That tends to have a flow-on effect into the alt-coin market. Even if some of these coins are basically garbage, there's money to be made, and that means demand for PC hardware is rising.

At the time of writing, the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X was out of stock at Newegg, and its list price was $741—higher than its $699 launch price. It's also higher than the current $592 price of the 7950X3D. You wouldn't expect supply side issues well over a year after the 7950X launched, so a demand side factor is obviously at play. And mining appears to be the culprit.

RandomX is the algorithm used by Monero and several other PoW coins. A look at XMRig benchmarks shows the list is dominated by high core count AMD chips. If one scrolls down to find the mainstream CPUs, you'll find the 7950X in 118th spot with a benchmark result of 26,783. The Intel Core i9 14900K—admittedly with far fewer entries, sits back in 211th spot with a result of 16,278.

There are CPU mining algorithms that thrive on large amounts of L3 cache, while others benefit from AVX instructions. Add to that miner-appealing power efficiency and you've pretty much ticked off the major strengths of AMD's Ryzen 7000-series CPUs. They're good at mining. A little known crypto called Qubic can generate up to $3 a day.

Even if we face a run of miners snapping up CPUs, at least gamers will still be able to buy the cheaper Zen 4 chips, but can we say the same about AMD's upcoming Zen 5 models? Should AVX-512 become widely adopted, the mining performance of AMD's chips will move even further ahead given Intel's challengers don't support AVX-512.

There's even speculation that AMD could release so-called low hash rate Zen 5 versions, which hearkens back to Nvidia's LHR graphics cards during the height of the mining boom. I'm less inclined to believe AMD would go down that path though.

If Bitcoin continues to rise, and money keeps flowing into the crypto market, shit and not-so-shitcoin mining profitability is only going to increase. That's not good news for those of you looking to buy a high core count Zen 5 CPU in the months ahead. Let's see how things play out.

"Overwhelming evidence" shows that Australian computer scientist Craig Wright is not bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, a UK judge declared Thursday.

In what Wired described as a "surprise ruling" at the closing of Wright's six-week trial, Justice James Mellor abruptly ended years of speculation by saying:

Dr. Wright is not the author of the Bitcoin white paper. Dr. Wright is not the person that operated under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Dr. Wright is not the person that created the Bitcoin system. Nor is Dr. Wright the author of the Bitcoin software.

Wright was not in the courtroom for this explosive moment, Wired reported.

In 2016, Wright claimed that he did not have the "courage" to prove that he was the creator of bitcoin, shortly after claiming that he had "extraordinary proof." As debate swirled around his claims, Wright began filing lawsuits, alleging that many had violated his intellectual property rights.

A nonprofit called the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) sued to stop Wright from filing any more lawsuits that it alleged were based on fabricated evidence, Wired reported. COPA submitted hundreds of alleged instances of forgery or tampering, Wired reported, asking the UK High Court for a permanent injunction to block Wright from ever making the claim again.

As a result of Mellor's ruling, CoinDesk reported that Wright's lawsuits against Coinbase and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey's Block would be halted. COPA's lawyer, Jonathan Hough, told CoinDesk that Wright's conduct should be considered "deadly serious."

"On the basis of his dishonest claim to be Satoshi, he has pursued claims he puts at hundreds of billions of dollars, including against numerous private individuals," Hough said.

On Thursday, Dorsey posted a "W" on X (formerly Twitter), marking the win and quoting Mellor's statements clearly rejecting Wright's claims as false. COPA similarly celebrated the victory.

“This decision is a win for developers, for the entire open source community, and for the truth," a COPA spokesperson told CoinDesk. "For over eight years, Dr. Wright and his financial backers have lied about his identity as Satoshi Nakamoto and used that lie to bully and intimidate developers in the bitcoin community. That ends today with the court’s ruling that Craig Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto."

Wright's counsel, Lord Anthony Grabiner, had argued that Mellor granting an injunction would infringe Wright's freedom of speech. Grabiner noted that "such a prohibition is unprecedented in the UK and would prevent Wright from even casually going to the park and declaring he’s Satoshi without incurring fines or going to prison," CoinDesk reported.

COPA thinks the injunction is necessary, though.

"We are seeking to enjoin Dr. Wright from ever claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto again and in doing so avoid further litigation terror campaigns," COPA's spokesperson told Wired.

And that's not all that COPA wants. COPA has also petitioned for Wright's alleged forgeries—some of which Reuters reported were allegedly produced using ChatGPT—to be reviewed by UK criminal courts, where he could face fines and/or prison time. Hough alleged at trial that Wright "has committed fraud upon the court," Wired reported, asking Britain's Crown Prosecution Service to consider prosecuting Wright for "perjury and perverting the course of justice," CoinDesk reported.

Wright's counsel argued that COPA would need more evidence to back such a claim, CoinDesk reported.

Mellor won't issue his final judgment for a month or more, Wired reported, so it's not clear yet if Wright will be enjoined from claiming he is bitcoin's creator. The judgment will “be ready when it’s ready and not before,” Mellor said.

Prosecutors seek from 40 to 50 years in prison for Sam Bankman-Fried for cryptocurrency fraud

Federal prosecutors asked a New York judge on Friday to sentence FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried to between 40 and 50 years in prison for cryptocurrency crimes they described as a “historic fraud.”

Prosecutors made the request as they submitted their presentence recommendations to a federal judge who will sentence a man who at one time dazzled the cryptocurrency world with his promotional skills, including his access to famous people willing to promote his businesses.

Bankman-Fried, 32, is scheduled to be sentenced in Manhattan federal court on March 28 for his November conviction on fraud and conspiracy charges.

Prosecutors say he cost customers and investors in FTX and its related companies at least $10 billion from 2017 through 2022.

He was extradited to the United States in December 2022 from the Bahamas after his companies collapsed a month earlier. Originally permitted to remain at home with his parents in Palo Alto, California, he was jailed last year weeks before his trial after Judge Lewis A. Kaplan concluded that he had tried to tamper with trial witnesses.

In their presentence submission, prosecutors described Bankman-Fried’s crimes as “one of the largest financial frauds in history, and what is likely the largest fraud in the last decade.”

“The defendant victimized tens of thousands of people and companies, across several continents, over a period of multiple years. He stole money from customers who entrusted it to him; he lied to investors; he sent fabricated documents to lenders; he pumped millions of dollars in illegal donations into our political system; and he bribed foreign officials. Each of these crimes is worthy of a lengthy sentence,” they wrote.

They said his “unlawful political donations to over 300 politicians and political action groups, amounting to in excess of $100 million, is believed to be the largest-ever campaign finance offense.”

And they said his $150 million in bribes to Chinese government officials was one of the single largest by an individual.

“Even following FTX’s bankruptcy and his subsequent arrest, Bankman-Fried shirked responsibility, deflected blame to market events and other individuals, attempted to tamper with witnesses, and lied repeatedly under oath,” prosecutors said, citing his testimony at trial.

Two weeks ago, Bankman-Fried’s lawyers attacked a probation office recommendation that their client serve 100 years in prison, saying a sentence of that length would be “grotesque” and “barbaric.”

They urged the judge to sentence Bankman-Fried to just a few years behind bars after calculating federal sentencing guidelines to recommend a term of five to 6 1/2 years in prison.

“Sam is not the ‘evil genius’ depicted in the media or the greedy villain described at trial,” his lawyers wrote. “Sam is a 31-year-old, first-time, non-violent offender, who was joined in the conduct at issue by at least four other culpable individuals, in a matter where victims are poised to recover — were always poised to recover — a hundred cents on the dollar.”

Starbucks ditches its Odyssey NFT program | TechCrunch

The NFT space may be down substantially from all-time highs, but brands and loyalty programs looking to reach fans in new ways can still find value, said Steve Kaczynski, co-author of the book “The Everything Token” and community lead for Starbucks Odyssey.

“Brand anchors” to gated areas like reward programs are something that companies will expand upon in 2024, he said. “I think this year we’re going to see a lot of community-based brand building,” he shared on TechCrunch’s Chain Reaction podcast.

Starbucks launched Starbucks Odyssey in 2022 as its initial foray into the web3 world. The experience combined the company’s Starbucks Reward loyalty program with NFTs to enhance customer experiences, TechCrunch previously reported.

“We’re able to help people find their tribe,” Kaczynski said. “I’ve seen that people who live in California in the Starbucks Odyssey community are really good friends with people in Chicago and they have met up in real life at times. This never would have happened if not for web3.”

The loyalty program has a five-tiered system with over 58,000 active participants at least on level one, Kaczynski said. “I can promise you those aren’t mostly or all web3 native people … it’s not just web3 people who are participating.”

Those who hit tier five of the program bought a “decent amount” off the secondary marketplaces, Kaczynski said. In December, for example, Starbucks announced that it’s sending the top 20 participants to Costa Rica to visit the coffee giant’s farms where beans are produced.

There are other “third-party utilities” to be developed through NFTs, not just by big companies like Starbucks or Nike but by local businesses that want to spin up loyalty programs or use tickets as an asset they can anchor and incentivize.

Kaczynski brought up this example: Let’s say Hot Pockets, the food brand, put out a promotion where it would give a 20% discount to gamers if they bought the brand’s Fortnite skin and connected it to a crypto wallet. “The purchaser is happy, the eater is happy and they get a discount and they’re in the ecosystem,” he said. “This person isn’t just a gamer, they’re an active gamer who’s participating and willing to spend disposable income on third-party things.”

When people think of NFTs, they often think of just expensive monkey pictures on the internet — and to be fair, that’s one part of it with Bored Ape Yacht Club — but there’s more value to be held in owning NFTs, Kaczynski says.

“Imagine you go into a museum and you see a beautiful painting on the wall, you can take a picture of that painting but it’s not worth any money. The picture on the wall is worth money because the museum owns it, it’s the original and they can prove both of those things,” Kaczynski said. “Up until recently you couldn’t do that with digital items” until NFTs came out.

Brands and companies having the ability to buy and sell and “truly own your loyalty is a new concept that makes it less one-way,” Kaczynski said. “While not all the community members engage in buying and selling … I think for a lot of people, having that optionality is so important.”

Video game support developer Keywords Studios tried to create a game solely using artificial intelligence but failed because the technology was "unable to replace talent".

As reported by Game Developer, Keywords said in its latest financial earnings report that it tried using the controversial technology to create a 2D game solely using Gen AI. The process lasted six months and highlighted "where Gen AI has the potential to augment the game development process, and where it lags behind".

Keywords said the AI tool "identified over 400 tools, evaluating and utilising those with the best potential" but it "ultimately utilised bench resource from seven different game development studios as part of the project, as the tooling was unable to replace talent".

The best results and quality needed can only be achieved by experts in their field.

It therefore ascertained game development could not exist without real people, and that AI could only be used as another tool in the process. "One of the key learnings was that whilst Gen AI may simplify or accelerate certain processes, the best results and quality needed can only be achieved by experts in their field utilising Gen AI as a new, powerful tool in their creative process," Keywords said.

The game will not be released to the public as it was just a research project, and Keywords didn't provide any additional information about what type of 2D game it created.

The developer is one of the biggest outsourcing studios in the world and have worked on several high calibre games such as Baldur's Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Alan Wake 2.
Video Game Voice Actors' Thoughts on AI

Video games have endured a particularly complicated relationship with AI. Embark Studios, the developer of smash hit shooter The Finals, was criticised for using AI voiceovers by myriad actors and even other developers, for example, but Embark told IGN that "making games without actors isn't an end goal" and claimed it used a mix of both recorded audio voices and audio generated via AI text to speech tools for its games.

Video game voice actors previously called out AI-generated explicit Skyrim mods, and Assassin's Creed Syndicate voice actress Victoria Atkin called AI-generated mods the “invisible enemy we're fighting right now” after discovering her voice was used by cloning software. Paul Eiding, the voice actor behind Colonel Campbell in the Metal Gear Solid series, also condemned its use.

The Witcher voice actor Doug Cockle also expressed caution and frustration at the growing presence of AI within the video game industry, calling it "inevitable" but "dangerous". Ironically, however, the biggest developer to use AI for voice acting so far is The Witcher studio CD Projekt Red, though this was only done to replace a deceased voice actor after gaining permission from the family.

Kryptot houkuttelevat aasialaisia sijoittajia

Bhutan ei ole ainoa Aasian maa, joka nyt pelaa riskialtista kryptopeliä.

Etelä-Korea, Kiina ja muut Aasian maat kattoivat helmikuussa noin 70 prosenttia maailman bitcoin-kaupan volyymeista, kertoo kryptotietoa keräävä The Block -sivusto.

Coindesk-verkkolehden mukaan Etelä-Koreassa kryptointo on noussut niin korkeaksi, että maan kryptopörssien vaihtomäärät nousivat hiljattain yksittäisenä päivänä jopa korkeammaksi kuin maan pörssin vaihtomäärä.

Kryptoista on leivottu uutta talouden veturia Hongkongille, jonka talous tarvitsee piristystä. Aasian rahoituskeskuksena tunnettu kaupunki on kärsinyt Kiinan talouden heikentymisestä ja maan kiinteistökriisistä.

Hongkongin Harvest Fundsin ja VSFG:n kaltaiset isot rahastot aikovat hakea bitcoinia seuraaville etf-rahastoille kaupankäyntilupaa.

Monet rahoituslaitokset, kuten DBS Bank Singaporessa, HSBC sekä Hana Bank Etelä-Koreassa ovat ryhtyneet toimiin kryptojen käyttöönottoa varten ja suunnittelevat salausteknologiaa niille.

Myös kuluttajat ovat innostuneet kryptoista. The Pulse of Crypto Singaporen raportin mukaan yli puolet haastattelluista singaporelaisista ilmoitti omistavansa kryptovaluuttoja.

Indonesiassa on puolestaan lanseerattu valtion kontrolloima kryptopörssi.
Kehityksessä alueellisia eroja

Monien maiden viranomaiset ovat tehneet merkittäviä siirtoja kryptovaluuttojen eteen.

Vakaat Aasian taloudet, kuten Japani, Etelä-Korea ja Taiwan, panevat jo täytäntöön kryptovaluuttojen kaupankäyntiä koskevia säännöksiä.

Kiina ja Intia ovat molemmat lähteneet tiukoille linjoille ja yrittävät valvoa kryptokaupankäyntiä erilaisilla kielloilla.

Intia haluaa luoda maahan oman virtuaalirahan eli digitaalisen rupian. Maan hallitus on tiukasti kieltänyt kryptokaupankäynnin, mutta epävarmasta sääntely-ympäristöstä huolimatta intialaiset ovat innokkaasti ottaneet kryptoja käyttöön.

Kiina seuraa Hongkongin kehitystä silmä kovana, koska sitä kiinnostavat digitaaliset valuutat vain jos ne eivät uhkaa maan hallintoa ja kontrollia.

Virtuaalivaluuttojen kehitys nähdään paikallisen talouden nostajana etenkin kehittyvissä talouksissa.

Thaimaassa asuu yli 71 miljoonaa ihmistä, mutta noin 16:lla prosentilla thaimaalaisista ei ole pankkitilejä.

Monessa Aasian maassa on jo digimaksujärjestelmiä käytössä, mutta innokkaimpien ennusteiden mukaan kryptoista voisi tulla paikallinen valuutta arkisessa kaupankäynnissä.

Iso osa kehittyvien maiden päivittäisistä ostoista on paikallista, ja virtuaalivaluutta mahdollistaisi pikkupuutikkien maksujärjestelmän ilman pankkeja.
