A Tesla supplier says it's still in limbo 2 weeks after Elon Musk fired the entire Supercharger team

  • Tesla installer Envirospark says it is still in the dark over Elon Musk's Supercharger plans.
  • CEO Aaron Luque told BI he hasn't heard from Tesla about the status of their incomplete projects.
  • The EV industry is reeling from Musk's decision to lay off Tesla's entire Supercharger team.

Elon Musk's recent firing of Tesla's entire Supercharger team seems to be causing chaos at some of its suppliers.

Aaron Luque, CEO of Tesla charger installer Envirospark, told Business Insider that the company still hasn't heard from Tesla after Musk gutted the company's Supercharger division, with dozens of potential charging sites now stuck in limbo. "There's no one remaining from the team that we worked with," said Luque. "In terms of formal communication from Tesla, we haven't received anything."

Envirospark, which has built EV charging sites for Tesla for over a decade, told BI that it has 26 projects with the company contracted or under construction. The status of these sites remains unclear, Luque said, with some of the property owners getting in touch with Envirospark to try and get information after being unable to reach anyone at Tesla. "We are kind of in a holding pattern," said Luque. "Everything was being quarterbacked by Tesla … we've lost that direction. So we have to wait until we get any further guidance on what the next steps are." Luque said that the company, which just raised $50 million in investment, has done between 2,500 to 3,000 installations for Tesla over the past 10 years in the US and Canada.

Elon Musk's decision to lay off Tesla's entire Supercharger team, reportedly around 500 employees, shocked the EV industry. Musk has since said that Tesla remains committed to its highly successful Supercharger network, posting on X on Friday that the automaker would spend over $500 million on the network this year. The Tesla CEO also posted shortly after the layoffs that Tesla still planned to grow the network, just at a slower pace with more focus on expanding existing locations. However, his comments have done little to quell the concerns of installers after what Luque described as a "whirlwind" few weeks.

Andres Pinter, the co-CEO of Bullet EV Charging Solutions, who previously called the layoffs a "sharp kick in the pants," told BI over email that Tesla got in touch around a week after the news of layoffs was released. He said Tesla reassured the company that the carmaker would move forward with in-process Supercharger sites and was planning to build new ones, without providing specifics. "It sounds like an existing Tesla team from a different department has been inserted to manage the charging division," said Pinter.

He said it was unclear whether this management move was temporary or permanent, adding that Bullet EV was now "back in the Tesla business but has a serious case of whiplash."

'Our phone has been ringing off the hook'

The sudden chaos surrounding Tesla's charging operations has sparked the interest of competitors, who previously stood little chance of competing with Tesla's extensive public charging network.

BP said it is eager to snap up Tesla Supercharging sites for its own charging network following the layoffs, per Bloomberg, and is "actively seeking" to hire talent to enable it to grow. "I think it's absolutely going to be a challenge for Tesla," said Luque, adding that Musk's layoffs have sparked a talent war for ex-Tesla Supercharging staff. Envirospark is among those now aggressively hiring former Tesla employees, with Luque describing the situation as the "single greatest talent acquisition opportunity we've ever seen."

His comments were echoed by Pinter, who described Musk's reorganization of Tesla as a "blessing in disguise" for Bullet EV Charging. "We have already hired several members of the former Tesla charging team and are diversifying our customer base to focus more on fleet and auto dealership charging," Pinter said. "My company is also keeping an eye out for other contractors who may be willing to sell their businesses in light of Tesla's unexpected move. Our phone has been ringing off the hook since last week," he added.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment made outside normal working hours.

Elon Musk laid off the Tesla Supercharger team; now he’s rehiring them

Last week the CEO said Tesla will spend $500 million expanding the charger network.

Two weeks ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk enacted widespread layoffs throughout the company, including the 500-strong team responsible for the brand's Supercharger. Now, Tesla is looking to hire some of them back, Bloomberg reports, as Musk promises to spend $500 million expanding the network.

The Supercharger network is inarguably Tesla's crown jewel. The company recognized early on that, even though its owners slow-charged at home each night, knowing they had the ability to rapidly recharge on the road was critical in making an electric vehicle an acceptable alternative to existing vehicles.

Since then, it has built out more than 2,000 charging stations in the US alone, with more than 25,000 plugs. More than that, the chargers invariably work, something that is often not true for other charging networks.

So successful is the Supercharger network that, over the course of last year, virtually every other automaker that sells or plans to sell EVs in the US has announced it will drop the CCS1 connector for the J3400 standard, originally developed by Tesla. But those announcements were about more than just switching plugs. Each time, the OEM also revealed it had negotiated access for its customers to the Supercharger network.

That made Musk's dismissal of the entire team responsible so hard to fathom. While the Supercharger network accounts for only about 5 percent of Tesla's revenues, that percent is poised to grow as more OEMs gain access. And although the charging experience for Tesla EVs at Superchargers is usually flawless, that's because it's optimized for a single make of car with just five different models; there's no guarantee that will prove true when cars from other brands try to charge.

The layoffs also appeared to put Tesla's plan to build a more powerful charger that would benefit cars using 800 V or 900 V architectures, including Audi, Porsche, Lucid, and others, on hold.

Worse yet, dozens of Supercharger sites that were in the works have stalled out, according to multiple reports.

But last week, Musk announced that Tesla would spend more than $500 million building out more chargers, just days after saying the focus would instead be on uptime at existing locations. And to do that, Tesla will need to rehire a whole bunch of people.

That started with Max de Zegher, who was an executive under the previous head of Supercharging, Rebecca Tinucci. (At the time of the layoffs, Electrek reported that Musk got rid of the entire team because its Tinucci did not lay off enough workers on her own.)

This is not the first time Musk has had to back-track an impetuous business decision. In 2019, he decided to close all of Tesla's retail locations to pay for a cheaper version of the Model 3 sedan. Within two weeks that decision had been reversed, in no small part due to the legal consequences of breaking so many leases.

Tesla now spends ad money to influence shareholders approval of Elon Musk’s $55B payday

Tesla has now disclosed that it is spending money to promote its shareholders vote to approve of Elon Musk’s $55 billion compensation package.

Back in 2018, Tesla shareholders approved one of the biggest compensation plans of all-time: a $55 billion fully stock-based CEO compensation plan for Elon Musk.

In January, a judge sided with lawyers representing a Tesla shareholder alleging that Tesla’s board misrepresented the compensation package when presenting it to shareholders.

It’s a complicated issue, but in short, the judge found that Tesla’s board and Musk didn’t play by the rules of a public company when it presented the plan to shareholders.

The judge found that Tesla had governance issues when coming up with the compensation plan and those issues were not communicated to shareholders before voting on the plan.

Instead, Tesla claimed that the plan was negotiated by “independent board members” when it was found that some board directors had personal financial dealings with Musk outside of Tesla, amongst other things.

The Delaware court found that this invalidated the vote, and therefore, Tesla had to rescind the compensation plan.

Last month, Tesla told shareholders that it will ask them to vote on moving Tesla’s state of incorporation to Texas and then revote for Musk’s compensation plan without changing anything.

Since then, Tesla has been working hard to get shareholders to vote for those two items. It started a website to promote it, sent countless communications to shareholders about it, and now, the company’s board is going a step further.

In a new filing with the SEC, Tesla confirmed that it is now buying ad spaces to encourage shareholders to vote for these items:

Tesla has to file with the SEC all the “communications” it has with shareholders regarding the vote and this time, the communications are listed as “sponsored” on Google – meaning that Tesla bought Google ads for it.

The automaker even spent money on Elon Musk’s pockets by buying ads on X with the post listed as “promoted”.

The increasingly discriminatory X (Twitter) now considers the term “cisgender” a slur. Owner Elon Musk posted last June, to the delight of his bigoted brigade of blue-check sycophants, that “‘cis’ or ‘cisgender’ are considered slurs on this platform.” On Tuesday, X made good on the regressive provocateur’s stance and reportedly began posting an official warning that the LGBTQ-inclusive terms could result in a ban from the platform. Not that you’d miss much.

TechCrunch reported on Tuesday that trying to publish a post using the terms “cisgender” or “cis” in the X mobile app will pop up a full-screen warning reading, “This post contains language that may be considered a slur by X and could be used in a harmful manner in violation of our rules.” It then gives you the choice of continuing to publish the post or conforming to the backward views of the worst of us and deleting it.

Of course, neither form of the term cisgender is a slur.

As the historically marginalized transgender community finally began finding at least a sliver of widespread and long overdue social acceptance in the 21st century, the term became more commonly used in the mainstream lexicon to describe people whose gender identity matches their sex at birth. Organizations including the American Psychological Association, World Health Organization, American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association recognize the term.

But some people have a hard time accepting and respecting that some humans are different from others. Those fantasizing (against all evidence and scientific consensus) that the heteronormative ideals they grew up with are absolute gospel sometimes take great offense at being asked to adjust their vocabulary to communicate respect for a community that has spent centuries forced to live in the shadows or risk their safety due to the widespread pathologization of their identities.

Musk seems to consider those the good ol’ days.

This isn’t the billionaire’s first ride on the Transphobe Train. After his backward tweet last June (on the first day of Pride Month, no less), the edgelord’s platform ran a timeline takeover ad from a right-wing nonprofit, plugging a transphobic propaganda film. In case you’re wondering if the group may have anything of value to say, TechCrunch notes that the same organization also doubts climate change and downplays the dehumanizing atrocities of slavery.

X also reversed course on a policy, implemented long before Musk’s takeover, that banned the deadnaming or misgendering of transgender people.

Tesla loses a top AI lead
Avatar for Fred Lambert
Fred Lambert | May 14 2024 - 1:26 pm PT

Tesla has lost a top AI engineer in charge of “planning, imitation learning & RL team for Tesla AI” amid a broader talent exodus.

Over the last few weeks, Tesla has been conducting several major waves of layoffs throughout its entire organization.

On top of the layoffs, we recently reported that some Tesla employees are leaving the company due to low morale.

There appears to be a clear exodus of talent at Tesla at the moment for many different reasons.

Another example is Paril Jain.

Jain spent the last 9 years at Tesla where he became an important part of Tesla’s autonomous driving effort.

Most recently, he was tech lead for “Planning, Imitation Learning & RL team for Tesla AI.” He listed the responsibilities of his team on LinkedIn:

Build the Foundation Models for autonomy that can scale to vehicle as well as humanoid platforms
Leverage millions of miles of driving data and interventions to build a robust and scalable end-to-end learning based self-driving system.
Research on cutting-edge techniques in generative models, reward models and reinforcement learning to improve the safety and comfort of our driving models.
Experiment with synthetic data generation and network driven data collection approaches to enhance the diversity and quality of training data
Ship production quality, safety-critical software to the entirety of Tesla’s vehicle fleet

Today, he announced that he is leaving Tesla to co-found ‘The Bot Company’, a startup to build robots founded by Kyle Vogt, co-founder of Twitch and Cruise.

Super pumped for the next phase of building. We have spent the last decade building robots that give people some of their time back, and it’s time to take it to the next level with The Bot Company.

Jain has good words for the Tesla team:

As for Tesla – it has been an incredible 7 years building the best self driving product on the market. You’ll love the upcoming versions of V12 and Actually Smart Summon. The team is on an amazing trajectory to continue pushing forward more improvements on the road to being driverless

So Elon's pivot to AI means losing the top AI talent? Truly some 5D chess there Elon.

Nonetheless, Tesla’s autonomous driving team appears to have lost another engineering leader.
Electrek’s Take

As I have been saying for a while, Tesla’s biggest strength has always been its capacity to attract and retain talent. The company always scored in the top places engineering students want to work.

I think the way Elon handled the latest round of layoffs, and the talent exodus that is happening now, shows that this capacity is eroding.

I hope that they can turn this around.

Tesla must face fraud suit for claiming its cars could fully drive themselves
Jon Brodkin - 5/16/2024, 5:56 PM
4–5 minutes

A federal judge ruled yesterday that Tesla must face a lawsuit alleging that it committed fraud by misrepresenting the self-driving capabilities of its vehicles.

California resident Thomas LoSavio's lawsuit points to claims made by Tesla and CEO Elon Musk starting in October 2016, a few months before LoSavio bought a 2017 Tesla Model S with "Enhanced Autopilot" and "Full Self-Driving Capability." US District Judge Rita Lin in the Northern District of California dismissed some of LoSavio's claims but ruled that the lawsuit can move forward on allegations of fraud:

The remaining claims, which arise out of Tesla's alleged fraud and related negligence, may go forward to the extent they are based on two alleged representations: (1) representations that Tesla vehicles have the hardware needed for full self-driving capability and, (2) representations that a Tesla car would be able to drive itself cross-country in the coming year. While the Rule 9(b) pleading requirements are less stringent here, where Tesla allegedly engaged in a systematic pattern of fraud over a long period of time, LoSavio alleges, plausibly and with sufficient detail, that he relied on these representations before buying his car.

Tesla previously won a significant ruling in the case when a different judge upheld the carmaker's arbitration agreement and ruled that four plaintiffs would have to go to arbitration. But LoSavio had opted out of the arbitration agreement and was given the option of filing an amended complaint.

LoSavio's amended complaint seeks class-action status on behalf of himself "and fellow consumers who purchased or leased a new Tesla vehicle with Tesla's ADAS [Advanced Driver Assistance System] technology but never received the self-driving car that Tesla promised them."
Cars not fully autonomous

Lin didn't rule on the merits of the claims but found that they are adequately alleged. LoSavio points to a Tesla statement in October 2016 that all its cars going forward would have the "hardware needed for full self-driving capability," and a November 2016 email newsletter stating that "all Tesla vehicles produced in our factory now have full self-driving hardware."

The ruling said:

Those statements were allegedly false because the cars lacked the combination of sensors, including lidar, needed to achieve SAE Level 4 ("High Automation") and Level 5 ("Full Automation"), i.e., full autonomy. According to the SAC [Second Amended Complaint], Tesla's cars have thus stalled at SAE Level 2 ("Partial Driving Automation"), which requires "the human driver's constant supervision, responsibility, and control."

If Tesla meant to convey that its hardware was sufficient to reach high or full automation, the SAC plainly alleges sufficient falsity. Even if Tesla meant to convey that its hardware could reach Level 2 only, the SAC still sufficiently alleges that those representations reasonably misled LoSavio.

The complaint also "sufficiently alleges that Musk falsely represented the vehicle's future ability to self-drive cross-country and that LoSavio relied upon these representations pre-purchase," Lin concluded. Musk claimed at an October 2016 news conference that a Tesla car would be able to drive from Los Angeles to New York City "by the end of next year without the need for a single touch."

Exclusive: Musk pushes plan for China data to power Tesla's AI ambitions

2024-05-17 07:22 - Fanny Potkin

Tesla (TSLA.O) is pushing ahead with plans to power the global development of its self-driving system with data from China that could be processed within the country, part of a strategic shift by Elon Musk, according to people with knowledge of the work.

As part of that effort, Tesla has been developing plans for a data center in China to train the algorithm needed for more fully autonomous vehicles, according to two people, who asked not to be named because the work remains private.

Until recently, Tesla has focused on efforts to secure approval from Chinese regulators to transfer data generated by its EVs in China out of the country for its “Full Self Driving” (FSD) system, according to the two people and an additional person with knowledge of the matter.

It was not clear if Tesla would proceed with both options for handling self-driving data from China - data transfer and a local data center - or if it was developing parallel plans as a hedge.

Tesla's efforts underscore the speed of the electric vehicle maker’s pivot to bet on a breakthrough in AI at a time when EV demand has slowed and its competition has deepened.

Its push to make fuller use of data from vehicles in China to develop the automaker's artificial intelligence for driving comes as the U.S. government has tried to clamp down on the transfer of AI technology from U.S. firms to China.

Tesla has not been able to offer the full version of FSD, which costs the equivalent of almost $9,000, in China.

A wider market for FSD in China would give a boost to the automaker's revenue and profits at a time when both are getting squeezed by pressure from Chinese rivals such as BYD (002594.SZ).

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

Setting up a data center in China for FSD development would require Tesla to work with a Chinese partner, two of the sources said. There is also a potential hardware-sourcing challenge.

It has had talks with Nvidia (NVDA.O) about acquiring graphic processing units for a China data center, according to one of the people, who was briefed on the discussions. U.S. sanctions bar Nvidia and its partners from selling its most advanced chips in China.

Nvidia declined to comment on whether it had held talks with Tesla.

Tesla’s campaign to make more use of data from China was kicked into high gear in a whirlwind trip by Musk to Beijing last month when he met with officials including Premier Li Qiang.

In his meeting with Li, Musk sought to smooth permissions for Tesla's data transfer, two of the sources said. The potential of Tesla investing in a data center in China was also raised, they said.

Musk also discussed the possibility of Tesla licensing its FSD systems to Chinese EV makers, one person said. Musk had said in April Tesla was talking to another "major" automaker about licensing FSD without naming it.

China's State Council Information Office did not respond to a request for comment.
THE CHINA EFFECT

China, the world’s largest car market, has the biggest fleet of sensor-equipped cars capable of collecting data from congested cities with complicated traffic patterns, making data generated there valuable for automakers and AI providers.

Musk previously expressed opposition to a China-based data center, arguing that data transfer to the United States was the most efficient option, two people said.

Since 2021, Tesla has stored data collected by its Chinese EVs in Shanghai. Over that time, Tesla's China team has been seeking approvals from Chinese regulators to transfer data out of the country, two people said.

Under a one-year pilot project, companies in Shanghai's Lingang Area, where Tesla's factory is located, will be allowed to transfer certain data without needing further security assessments, Reuters reported on Friday.

Some analysts see Musk as trying to make China a launchpad for self-driving in the same way Tesla’s 2019 bet on its Shanghai Gigafactory allowed it to break through as a mass-market electric vehicle maker.

"It would definitely be a milestone for Tesla if it rolls out FSD in China and leverages the China data for algorithm training," said Yale Zhang, managing director at Shanghai-based consultancy Automotive Foresight.

"China had played a key role in scaling up EV production for Tesla with the Shanghai factory. It would again serve a significant part in scaling up mass adoption of autonomous driving technologies," he said.

Many industry experts expect it will take years before fully autonomous cars are commonplace, but predictions vary widely.

Driver-assistance features now offered in China are "level two" systems, meaning they require a driver ready to take over. Tesla's FSD and its less-advanced options of Autopilot, are also level-two systems requiring attentive drivers.

More fully automated vehicle fleets operated by Baidu (9888.HK), China's biggest search engine operator, and Pony.ai, an autonomous driving startup, run in limited test zones.

But China's EV makers, including BYD, have made self-driving and advanced driver assist systems a priority. Mercedes and BMW have been granted licenses to test level-three systems that allow drivers to take their hands off the wheel and look away on a wider range of roads in China.

At least five automakers - Hyundai (005380.KS), Mazda (7261.T), Toyota (7203.T), Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and Nissan (7201.T) - have approval to transfer some of their data out of China, but none of those approvals are for data to be used to train AI systems, according to lawyers, state media reports and analysts.

Penalties for violating data privacy laws that came into effect in China in 2021 are a major risk factor for data operations, groups representing foreign businesses in China say.

When asked about competition from Chinese EV makers during a call with investors after Tesla’s quarterly earnings last month, Musk said Tesla should be viewed more as an AI company.

He said he was confident Tesla’s FSD system would work “pretty well without modification in almost any market”. It would work better with “country-specific” training, Musk said.

SpaceX Drops A Load on Saskatchewan

It came from outer space!
Andrew Fleming
May 19, 2024

Elon Musk, like any cartoon supervillain worth their salt, has come up with several creative and unusual ways for people to be killed over the years.

While the world’s wealthiest weirdo has yet to unleash an army of flying killer robots like the bad guys did in Iron Man 2, a film he had a cameo in as himself — not unlike a fellow rich asshole did decades earlier in the sequel to Home Alone — there’s no denying the guy has red in his ledger.

There’s the untold number of Ukrainians who surely perished at the hands of Russian forces after Musk cut off internet access through his Starlink satellites to certain parts of the country like Crimea that Putin just really, really wanted. Crom only knows how many mouth-breathers huffed their last on a ventilator after “doing their own research” on the cesspool of COVID misinformation he single-handedly turned Jack Dorsey’s erstwhile global town square into. And of course there’s all the self-crashing cars.

Last month, Tesla settled a lawsuit for an undisclosed amount over the death of Walter Huang, an Apple engineer who was killed in 2018 after his Muskmobile decided to veer into a California highway divider, and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently looking at 23 separate fatalities involving the company’s autopilot system.

But dropping hunks of metal on people from outer space is a potential new one.

A Saskatchewan grain farmer named Barry Sawchuk and his two sons were out checking the fields before planting season recently and were more than a little surprised to find a mysterious 100-pound object made of charred carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb somewhere it had no earthly business being. Another smaller piece of space junk was found on his land a few days later, and neighbors have since reported finding even more nebulous flotsam and jetsam over a 28-mile radius.

It’s a good thing none of it landed on any chicken coops or Musk might have Kristi Noem to worry about.

Word spread quickly and reached the desk of Samantha Lawler, an astronomy professor at the nearby University of Regina, who collaborated with a colleague at Harvard in her orbit to figure out it came from a SpaceX Dragon flight that returned its crew capsule safely to the planet in February with four passengers from the International Space Station. They say the junk came from the trunk (yes, that’s the name!), an unpressurized cargo section below the capsule that provides power during flight and ideally burns up after ejection when it hits the atmosphere on the way back down. It’s like the “service module” from the old Apollo missions, but with extra storage.

Lawler has been an academic Chicken Little for years about the danger of freefalling space shit, especially in a time when space travel has been privatized and so many bored billionaires would rather spend their money playing Spaceman Spiff than, say, solving world hunger or the climate crisis. Or simply paying their taxes. Space launches and re-entries are now almost a daily thing, and it is probably only a matter of time before some innocent Earthling gets a quick death from above, although the European Space Agency say the odds of someone getting whacked by space waste are roughly one in 100 billion.

“I’ve been yelling about this for five years, and now a piece of junk fell an hour away from my house,” Lawler told the Canadian Press. “It’s literally hitting close to home.”

Oddly enough, the big SpaceX dump nearly hit home in a very different way. While it would’ve been funnier if it had instead landed near Vulcan, an otherwise unremarkable hick town in neighboring Alberta that does its best to milk the connection to the Star Trek universe, the Sawchuk farm is actually just a three-hour drive from where Musk first stayed with distant family after arriving solo in Canada as a teenager and scoring citizenship through his mother.

It’s hard to imagine he enjoyed being put to work as a lowly farmhand, and it’s not outside the realm of possibility he’s now taking his revenge by peppering the prairies with deadly space pellets. Even though surely some of the residents are verified on his generic social media site and send him the required eight bucks a month.

Which sounds totally crazy, obviously, but don’t forget who it is we’re talking about here.

Elon Musk vahvisti vaatimuksensa: haluaa lisää omistusta Teslasta tai vie siistit jutut muualle
Janne Heleskoski
2–3 minutes
