The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Timo Soini, has recently had a lot on his mind.
As a long-time leader of the nationalist True Finns party, Soini is the official opponent of the EU in the Finnish government.
After Brexit, Soini travelled to London to meet British MPs. Finland’s Minister of Finance Petteri Orpo (National Coalition Party) criticized the visit saying that it was not beneficial for Finland and might cause confusion, even though Soini himself has said that holding a referendum on leaving the EU is not an option during the remaining three years in government.
Soini said he visited Britain as a party leader, not as a foreign minister, but for example Sky News referred to him as “Finland’s deputy PM”.
Soini usually comments on current events in his official blog. Soini has a unique writing style, which is sometimes hard to understand even for a native Finnish speaker.
Suomen Kuvalehti publishes (below) the entire blog post Soini wrote having returned from London. The tone differs quite a lot from how he expresses his views while speaking abroad.

Enemy of the People, The Populist
by Timo Soini (Out Minister of Finland)
“In the Soviet Union, there were enemies of the people. They had to be got rid of. And they were got rid of, mostly through the length of their heads.
When you were labeled an enemy of the people, you were equally shunned by your own and strangers alike. A nuisance and a waste of natural resources was quietly removed in the still of the night without unnecessary explanation. The enemies of the people willingly confessed to their unworthiness, you see. Instead of grace, the law of Archimedes was at work. Admittedly, not in the bathtub, but below the surface of the ground.
The enemy of the people was a kulak, a member of the bourgeoisie, a Christian, a land-owner, an exploiter or equipped with faulty conscience, i.e. the wrong kind of opinions.
Enemies of the people no longer exist, or certainly aren’t labeled as such. There has been product innovation in this field. The Populist, the friend of the people, has become an enemy of the people.
Who are they, these worthless ones? The low-browed, with their short rows to hoe, ignorant, stupid and dimwitted? They are found widely around Finland. They are conservative in their opinions, wear sideburns, drive personal cars, eat meat, heat their saunas even if this invokes climate change, skii in the traditional style. They do not engage in tantric sex but rather stick to meat and potatoes, will bellow into megaphones if one is given to them, are short-haired and have jobs.
A dangerous bunch. Populists. They do not understand. They do not have enough information, demand this and that without knowing anything about nothing. Surely representative democracy is enough for these fools, no need to discuss the EU and the UN with them in the least, as they think those are basically bumper stickers for cars, anyway.
Damn populists, these enemies of the people. Voting wrong with their wrong opinions. We need to have demostrations against them, at home and abroad. Populism must be brought under control, take this you “persut” (True Finns), Christians, country yokel Center party members, fairweather Christians and other narrow-minded Nihilists. Let’s get the Guggenheim Helsinki up with state funding and allocate more money to the Worker’s May Day parades.
Do a good deed, report a populist. Populistwatch.

Some rare praise to the Helsingin Sanomat monthly supplement. You know what I’m talking about … Wrong outcome. It was the other one.
Enjoy the summer. Forget the populists for a moment, because even populists take a vacation.”
