SAKSASSA on herännyt valtakunnan laajuinen pöyristys liittyen pienen Waldsiedlungin paikkakunnan valtuustojohtajan valintaan. Tehtävään valittiin viime viikon torstaina uusnatsistisen Kansallisen demokratiapuolueen NPD:n poliitikko Stefan Jagsch.

Altenstadtin kuntaan kuuluvan noin 2 500 asukkaan Waldsiedlungin politiikasta tieto on saavuttanut hiljalleen muuta maata. Valintaa ovat nyt arvostelleet Saksan johtavat poliitikotkin, kuten kristillisdemokraattisen CDU-puolueen puheenjohtaja Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, joka on BBC-kanavan mukaan vaatinut valinnan peruuttamista.

”Sietämätöntä ja täysin mahdotonta hyväksyä”, totesi puolestaan sosiaalidemokraattisen SPD-puolueen varapuheenjohtaja Ralf Stegner Twitterissä.

POIKKEUKSELLISEEN tilanteeseen jouduttiin, kun kukaan muu ei hakenut tehtävää. Jagschin valintaa tukivat yksimielisesti myös perinteisten puolueiden valtuutetut, Deutche Welle -kanava kertoo.

NPD-puolue aloitti toimintansa 1964 ja sitä on pidetty kansallissosialistien eli Adolf Hitlerin natsipuolueen hengenheimolaisena. Puoluetta on yritetty kieltää useaan otteeseen.

Pari vuotta sitten Saksan perustuslakituomioistuin antoi pitkään valmistellun päätöksen, jonka nojalla NPD sai jatkaa toimintaansa. Tuomioistuimen mukaan NPD on tavoitteiltaan ja ideologialtaan perustuslain vastainen, mutta ei ollut konkreettisia viitteitä siitä, että se pystyisi toteuttamaan tavoitteitaan.

Vaikka puolueella on takanaan lain suoja, muut puolueet eivät yleensä ottaen voi sietää sitä. SPD-puolueen pääsihteeri Lars Klingbeil esimerkiksi ilmaisi lauantaina mietteensä näin: ”Me emme tee yhteistyötä natsien kanssa! Ei ikinä!”
WALDSIEDLUNG sijaitsee keskisessä Saksassa Hessenin osavaltiossa noin 35 kilometriä Frankfurtista koilliseen. Uutistoimisto Reutersin mukaan Jagschin valinta jakaa paikallisia.

”Ongelma on, että Jagsch on erittäin mukava ihminen, joka kuuluu väärään puolueeseen. Minä vastustan NPD:n jäsenten ylentämistä”, totesi paikallinen asukas Ingo Waldschmidt Reutersille.

Valtuustoon kuuluva SPD:n jäsen Ali Riza Agdas puolestaan kertoi Süddeutsche Zeitung -lehdelle: ”Olen tuntenut hänet vuosia, eikä minulla ole ollut mitään ongelmia hänen kanssaan.”

ÄÄRIOIKEISTON suosio on herättänyt huolta pitkään maltillisissa saksalaispiireissä. Kansalliskonservatiivinen Vaihtoehto Saksalle -puolue eli AfD sai syyskuun alussa poikkeuksellisen hyvän vaalituloksen kahdessa itäisen Saksan osavaltiossa.

AfD sai Saksin osavaltiossa 27,5 prosenttia äänistä, mikä oli puolueen kaikkien aikojen vaalitulosennätys. Se jäi kuitenkin kakkoseksi, kun valtapuolue CDU sai 32,1 prosenttia äänistä.

Brandenburgissa puolue sai 23,5 prosenttia äänistä, kun sosiaalidemokraattien SPD voitti 26,3 prosentin osuudella.

Myös Saksassa kansallismielisen politiikan kannatus on noussut vuosina 2015 ja 2016 Eurooppaa ravistelleen muuttoliikekriisin jälkeen.

Germany gun attacks: At least two killed in Halle shootings

At least two people have been killed and two others injured in shootings at a kebab shop and near a synagogue in the east German city of Halle.

One person was arrested, but police believe at least one other may have fled the area in a vehicle.

At least one gunman was seen wearing a military-style outfit carrying several weapons, witnesses say.

Reports suggest there was also a shooting incident in Landsberg, some 15km (9 miles) east of Halle.

The situation remains unclear and local residents in both areas have been told to stay inside their homes.

Two injured people with gun wounds are having surgery at Halle's university hospital, a spokesman told AFP news agency.

German federal prosecutors have said they are taking over the investigation because of the "particular importance of the case".

What do we know about the attacks?
Police say a suspect was arrested after fleeing the scene, but their identity and motive has not yet been released.

Max Privorotzki, leader of the local Jewish community, told Der Spiegel magazine that a gunman had tried to get into a Halle synagogue where between 70 and 80 people were inside.

One witness said one attacker "dressed like a policeman... fully armed" had thrown a petrol bomb or grenade over a cemetery wall.

The violence came as Jews celebrated Yom Kippur, Judaism's holiest day.

A witness at the kebab shop told German n-tv news that a gunman in camouflage had opened fire on the venue.

"The man came up to the doner shop, he threw something like a grenade, it didn't explode, and he opened fire with an assault rifle... I hid in the toilet," the witness told a TV reporter near the scene.

A video posted on social media appears to show at least one suspect, wearing a helmet, firing into the air from behind a car.

Shane Smith, a tourist from New Zealand, heard six loud shots from the flat where he was staying, he told the BBC.

He later witnessed a vehicle speeding up a local road, pursued by a police car with a damaged window.

Local police have told local residents to stay calm and be wary of false reports of further incidents.

A minute's silence was held for the victims in the European Parliament in Brussels.

"Together with you, I would like to express my sympathies to the German police forces, the German people and the German Jewish community," European Parliament President David Sassoli said, leading the tribute.

Germany shooting: 'Rampage situation' as two killed in city of Halle

German media report gunmen tried to enter synagogue and threw grenade into kebab restaurant
Authorities in the eastern German city of Halle say they are dealing with a “rampage situation” after gunmen reportedly targeted a synagogue and a kebab shop in the city, killing two people.

Several shots were fired in the Paulus quarter north of the city centre around midday, police said. The head of the the Jewish community in Halle, Max Privorotzki, told Spiegel magazine that gunmen in military gear had tried to force their way into a synagogue but were repelled by security personnel.

The Jewish community has been celebrating Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism. There were 70 to 80 people in the synagogue at the time of the incident, Privorotzki said.


One of the attackers had tried to open the door to the synagogue and then the gate to the cemetery by shooting at the locks. “We barricaded the doors from the inside and waited for the police”, Privorotzki added. Worship had continued after the attack, he said.

Witnesses also said the attackers had fired at a nearby kebab shop, reportedly killing a male customer inside. Two people were taken to hospital with bullet wounds, police confirmed.

Germany’s public prosecutor general took charge of investigations but would not comment on a possible background behind the attack. “We are investigating into all possible directions, including antisemitic and rightwing extremist motives”, a spokesperson told the Guardian.

Police later said one suspect had been arrested but urged people to remain vigilant. It did not give any details of the person arrested and said police were in the process of stabilising the situation.


“Our forces have detained one person,” a tweet from the police said. “Please remain alert, however. We have deployed forces in and around Halle and are stabilising the situation until we have all the relevant information.”

According to Spiegel, the two attackers had separated after the initial assault, with one man arrested by police on the motorway after hijacking a taxi.

A video, filmed on a mobile phone and broadcast by regional TV station MDR, showed a man in green military gear standing at the back of a parked car, firing a rifle.

A resident interviewed by the news agency dpa said a man dressed like a police officer had taken aim and shot a young girl with an automatic rifle outside the synagogue, and then thrown a hand grenade over a wall at the Jewish cemetery. The report could not be confirmed.


Another witness said a man wearing a military outfit and helmet had walked up to the Kiez Döner kebab shop on nearby Ludwig-Wucherer-Strasse and thrown a stun grenade at the building that bounced off the door frame. The man had then fired a shot inside the kebab shop, where five or six people were present, the witness said.

The central train station was closed while the area was under lockdown, the rail company Deutsche Bahn said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told a news conference: “It is terrible news from Halle and I hope very much that the police will manage to catch the perpetrator or perpetrators as quickly as possible so that no other person will be in danger.”

Rainer Haseloff, the state premier of Saxony-Anhalt, said he was shocked by what he called a “cowardly assault on peaceful coexistence in our country”.

Germany shooting: suspected gunman livestreamed synagogue attack

About 35 minutes was broadcast live on Twitch in latest instance of extremists using shootings to promote propaganda

The suspected gunman in the Yom Kippur synagogue attack in Halle, Germany, broadcast his rampage on the livestreaming platform Twitch, in the latest instance of rightwing extremists using mass shootings to create and promote real-time propaganda.

About 35 minutes of video was broadcast live on Twitch, an Amazon-owned platform that is primarily used by video game players, the company confirmed Wednesday. Twitch removed the video but copies had already been downloaded and shared elsewhere on the internet, highlighting the challenges faced by platforms attempting to stymy the dissemination of such material.

The Halle attack is the second livestreamed rightwing extremist attack this year, following the March massacre of 51 Muslim worshippers in Christchurch, New Zealand, which was broadcast on Facebook Live. The alleged gunman in the April synagogue shooting in Poway, California, shared a Facebook Live link in a manifesto posted on the extremist message board 8chan prior to his attack, suggesting that he planned to livestream the shooting that left one dead and two injured.

“Livestreaming enables extremists to amplify their actions, but even more so, bringing their supporters and others that they want to inspire on the journey with them,” said Oren Segal, director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism. “It is an interactive radicalization tool that also helps spread content that may inspire the next attacker after them.”

Aspects of the video, which was reviewed by the Guardian, appear designed for this exact purpose. The video opens with the suspect introducing himself in English to the camera as “Anon” and declaring himself an antisemite, anti-feminist and Holocaust denier. The use of English suggests he had an international audience in mind, and a reference to falling birth rates is in line with popular white nationalist tropes. “Anon” is internet lingo for an anonymous user of forums such as 4chan and 8chan.

“These folks are preparing their social media strategy as they prepare their weapons,” Segal said. “That’s the modern terrorist.”

The Halle shooter also appears to have emulated the Christchurch and Poway shooters by preparing a “manifesto” and posting it online prior to his attack. Three documents describing the motivation and weaponry for the attack were posted on the site Kohlchan, according to the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation at King’s College London.

The documents, which include a link to the livestream of the shooting, are vehemently antisemitic and racist. They state that the attack’s timing – on Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement and one of the religion’s high holidays – was intentional. They also assert the shooter considered a mosque or “antifa ‘culture’ center” as alternate targets.

“We worked with urgency to remove this content and will permanently suspend any accounts found to be posting or reposting content of this abhorrent act,” said Brielle Villablanca, a spokeswoman for Twitch.

The video was viewed by just five people during the attack, the company said, and by about 2,200 people in the 30 minutes after the attack had ended and before Twitch took it down.

“This video was not surfaced in any recommendations or directories,” the company said in a statement posted on Twitter. “Instead, our investigation suggests that people were coordinating and sharing the video via other online messaging services.”

Despite this limited initial audience, however, the video has since been broadly disseminated on Telegram, an encrypted messaging app that has become a haven for white nationalists and other far-right extremists. One copy of the video had been viewed by more than 33,000 people on Telegram as of Wednesday afternoon. Edited versions of the video were also being shared openly on Twitter throughout the day on Wednesday.

Twitch said that it had shared the video’s hash – a unique fingerprint for a photo and video that can be used to detect it automatically – with an industry consortium to help prevent the spread of the video onto other platforms. A spokesperson for Facebook confirmed that the company was working to remove and block the video from its platforms. YouTube and Twitter did not immediately respond to queries.

“We’re having the same conversation every few months, and it’s just going to different platforms,” Segal noted. “Instead of talking about 8chan, today it’s Telegram. Instead of a Facebook stream, we’re talking about Twitch. I think that underscores a broader issue that extremists will migrate from platform to platform.”

Becca Lewis, a research affiliate at Data & Society who studies online political subcultures, agreed that there are no simply technical solutions, though tech companies should work to limit the reach of such videos.

“We’re past the point where it would make sense to simply disable livestream for platforms like YouTube, Facebook and Twitch – there are entire economies built around them by now,” she said. “So I think we need to be thinking about preventative measures that more broadly tackle racism and bigotry in society, which is of course a long and grueling process.”
