Mitä toi "all options are on the table" meinaa? jotain sotilaallista operaatiota myös? :|
Varmaan rajan sulkeminen Irlannin saarella on se äärimmäisin optio.
:sad1:
Onhan tuota yritetty, on aika pitkä raja valvottavaksi.

Sehän meni hyvin, eli UK-Ukraina kauppasopimuksessa on pieniä ongelmia :D

UK forced to reopen sensitive Ukraine trade pact after errors in text

Exclusive: Sections of the largely copied and pasted agreement tie Britain to EU rules

The UK has been forced to reopen its trade deal with Ukraine, one of its most sensitive post-Brexit agreements, after errors were found in the original text, The Independent can reveal.

The UK has been forced to reopen its trade deal with Ukraine, one of its most sensitive post-Brexit agreements, after errors were made in the original text, The Independent can reveal.

The pact was signed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in October last year, and lauded as a key example of Britain’s post-Brexit trade and foreign policies. The agreement not only covers the commercial relationship between Britain and the eastern European country but also defence cooperation to support Kiev’s sovereignty.

It follows the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, an area still internationally recognised as part of Ukraine. It also came amid a deterioration of relations between Moscow and London in the aftermath of the poisoning of Sergei Skripal in Salisbury in 2018.

UK-Ukraine ties were again thrust into the spotlight last month when Russia claimed it had fired warning shots at a British vessel as it passed close to the Crimean peninsula.

Underscoring the political importance of the agreement in October Johnson said the UK was “Ukraine’s most fervent supporter”. He added: “Whether it’s our defence support, stabilisation efforts, humanitarian assistance or close cooperation on political issues, our message is clear: we are utterly committed to upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”.

However, two officials told The Independent that the pact was already having to be reworked after mistakes were noted in the drafting of trade chapters. Some of the errors are a result of copying and pasting sections that bind the UK to EU rules, the same officials said.

Problems emerged when the trade department sought to create guidance on how the deal should be used by businesses in February and March, after the deal came into force in January. However, the fact that the deal needed fresh negotiation and drafting was not made public by the trade Department for International Trade.

One of the same government officials said that this was a deal that “no one wanted to get wrong”. Particularly as the deal was subject to especially close scrutiny by the European Union, they added. Separately, an EU official told The Independent that they had noted that agreement bound the UK to rules in some areas that they had not expected.

A spokesperson for the Department for International Trade said: “It is standard practice for small sections of agreements to be amended and updated over time to reflect developments, or to add greater clarity that is helpful to businesses.”

However, one of the same officials familiar with the agreement’s development said that the changes which needed to be made were not minor, and could have a significant impact on businesses. They added that they amounted to errors rather than an update.

One business with operations in Ukraine, which the official wouldn’t name due to commercial sensitivities, had also flagged additional issues with the text, they said. The issues touched on trade in both services and goods the official confirmed.

Emily Thornberry, Labour’s shadow international trade secretary said: ”This is not the only time the government has made basic errors when rolling over our EU treaties, but it is by far the most serious.”

“Of all the 67 non-EU countries with whom the UK signed rollover agreements in 2019 and 2020, the Ukraine deal was the only one considered of sufficient strategic importance to be signed by the Prime Minister himself, making it all the more astonishing that it is now having to be re-written,” Ms. Thornberry added. “This act of gross incompetence needs to be not just immediately rectified, but urgently explained.”

The sensitivity of UK-Ukraine relations was underlined in the government’s recent Integrated Review of its defence and foreign policy strategy. One section on Russia notes that Britain will increase support for countries in Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, “where we will continue to build the capacity of its armed forces.”

Sam Lowe, senior fellow at the Centre for European Reform said that while mistakes in trade deals are “unfortunate but not entirely uncommon”. He added that was unsurprising that it’s happened with a rollover agreement” because these have tended to include more copying and pasting of text than fresh deals.

“It’s a deeper agreement than others and includes commitments to follow EU rules in some areas. And if there’s one thing we’ve learnt it’s that the UK government doesn’t like to be bound by EU rules,” Mr. Lowe said.

A former senior Australian trade negotiator told The Independent that it is correct that agreements sometimes need to be amended, but that substantial changes weren’t often made so soon after the text of an agreement is finalised.

The ex-negotiator said this might be indicative of the trade department’s rush to secure agreements in order to ensure continuity after Brexit. Small, incorrect changes or a failure to make the right change in treaties can cause “big headaches”, they said. Given the rush to roll over agreements, the public should expect further trade deals to be revisited in the coming months, they said, adding: “Copy and paste can be dangerous.”

Cummings tarjoilee taas tyckitingiä.
Dominic Cummings: I discussed ousting PM after 2019 election landslide
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-57880118

Dominic Cummings has revealed he discussed ousting Boris Johnson within days of the Conservatives winning the December 2019 election by a landslide.

The PM's former chief adviser told the BBC it seemed that, by mid-January 2020, Mr Johnson did not "have a plan".

Mr Cummings also alleged the PM's wife Carrie Johnson had tried to influence government appointments.

But, despite quitting Downing Street last autumn following a power struggle, he denied being motivated by revenge.

Asked about Mr Cummings's comments, a government spokesperson said ministers were fully focused on recovery from the pandemic and restoring the economy.

In his first major TV interview, Mr Cummings - who ran the Vote Leave campaign in the 2016 EU referendum campaign before working as the prime minister's adviser - told BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg that:

- While he thinks Brexit was a good idea and the right thing for the UK, he says anyone who expresses certainty over this "has a screw loose"
- The controversial claim made by Vote Leave during the referendum campaign that the UK was giving the EU £350m a week was a trap set to antagonise the Remain camp
- He has not spoken to the prime minister since he resigned last autumn

Von der Leyen sanoi Borikselle eilen, että lölz GTFO, Brexit-sopimusta ei neuvotella uusiksi Pohjois-Irlannin osalta, vaikka brittipuoli olisi siihen niin kovin tyytymätön. Sovittu mikä sovittu ja sen pohjalta mennään. Johnsonin hallitus on yllättynyt ja pöyristynyt siitä, kuinka taipumattomasti EU pitää kiinni joistakin tahroista paperilla.

Johnson, Lord Frost ja kumppanit ehdottavat seuraavanlaisia muutoksia Pohjois-Irlannin osalta:
BBC wrote: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-57930799
...
In a 28-page document, the UK government suggested changes to:

- remove customs checks on goods where the GB-registered businesses sending them have declared their final destination is Northern Ireland
- get rid of certificates and checks for food products "only ever intended to be consumed in Northern Ireland"
- remove medicines entirely from the scope of the protocol
- allowing labelled goods conforming to UK rules to circulate freely in Northern Ireland alongside EU-registered products

Writing on Twitter, Ms von der Leyen said: "The EU will continue to be creative and flexible within the protocol framework. But we will not renegotiate.

"We must jointly ensure stability and predictability in Northern Ireland."

Downing Street said Mr Johnson used the call to set out that the UK is looking for "significant changes to existing mechanisms."

It said the PM urged the EU to look at the proposals seriously, and hopes they'll recognise realities and that practical solutions are needed.

The spokesman added: "Solutions could not be found through the existing mechanisms of the protocol. That was why we had set out proposals for significant changes to it.

"There is a huge opportunity to find reasonable, practical solutions to the difficulties facing people and businesses in Northern Ireland, and thereby to put the relationship between the UK and the EU on a better footing.

"We didn't expect the EU to take such a purist or maximalist approach… we've not called for the scrapping of the protocol at this time."

The prime minister is unimpressed by Foreign Office concern that his hardline approach will upset the relationship with the US. President Joe Biden is mindful of his Irish heritage. And the White House has a significant stake in the Belfast accord.

Johnson, insiders say, is unconcerned. He has Churchillian pretensions. During his spell as foreign secretary a few years ago, diplomats reported he would spend time in front of the mirror mimicking the wartime leader’s mannerisms. He is not about to be pushed around by Biden.

Tässä on kanssa pitkä juttu siitä, miten UK voi helpostii romahtaa kasaan koska ei ole mitään kirjoitettua perustuslakia jonka takia täysin moraaliton kusipää kuten Johnson voi sikailla menemään.

The Johnson administration now wants even the weak supervisory bodies, with their limited powers, to be “on message”. The latest gambit in this regard is the nomination of Paul Dacre as head of Ofcom, the media regulator.

That is because Dacre, the long-time editor of the Daily Mail, is a serial offender in breaking rules of decency and ethics in British journalism. When, in 2016, three High Court judges ruled that Brexit could not simply be implemented on the basis of the “the will of the people” without parliamentary involvement, the front page of the Mail featured photos of the three judges and the headline “Enemies of the people”.

This could scarcely have gone to print without Dacre’s approval. He has hardly been more lenient with the BBC. For years the corporation has been his newspaper’s number one enemy: in a vociferous and unrelenting war of aggression, he lobbed absurd accusations at the broadcaster, such as suggesting it peddles a kind of “cultural Marxism”.

Johnson now wants to put this man in charge of the media regulator Ofcom, despite considerable opposition. In fact, there is a selection committee for this position. After the committee arrived at the unanimous decision that Dacre was not a suitable candidate for the post, something happened that is typical of the Johnson administration: instead of looking for a new, more suitable candidate, the commission was simply dissolved.
