But pro-Brexit campaign group Leave Means Leave said it would represent a "bad deal for the UK" which would "only slide further as the EU takes more and more".

"The prime minister has totally misled 17.4 million voters and left it as late as possible to reveal that she remains a stubborn Remainer," said its chair John Longworth.

"We will be controlling neither laws, nor trade, nor borders. A total, humiliating capitulation."

Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage said the plan amounted to a "sell-out to global corporates" and would do nothing for the 90% of British firms which do not export to Europe.

Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned from the UK government.

His resignation comes days after Theresa May secured the cabinet's backing for her Brexit plan despite claims from Brexiteers that it was too "soft".

Mr Davis was appointed Brexit secretary in 2016 and was responsible for negotiating the UK withdrawal from the EU.

A Brexiteer hailed his resignation as a "principled and brave decision".

Conservative MP Peter Bone said Mr Davis had "done the right thing", adding: "The PM's proposals for a Brexit in name only are not acceptable."

Labour Party chairman Ian Lavery said: "This is absolute chaos and Theresa May has no authority left."

'No choice but resignation'

After many months of rumours that he would pull the plug, David Davis has actually quit as Brexit Secretary.

His unhappiness in government has been no secret for some time, but after the prime minister's Chequers agreement with cabinet ministers to pursue looser ties with the EU than he desired, he found his position untenable.

After a visit to Downing Street on Sunday he concluded that he had no choice but to walk. It's expected that at least one other minister will resign alongside him from the Brexit department. The move, while not completely surprising, throws doubt onto how secure the government's Brexit strategy is.

The resignation comes as Mrs May prepares to face the House of Commons and then Tory MPs and peers on Monday to discuss her Brexit plan.

Mrs May is expected to tell MPs that the strategy agreed on by the cabinet at Chequers on Friday is the "right Brexit" for Britain.

Mr Davis is yet to comment on his resignation, but Daily Express correspondent Sarah O'Grady, the wife of Mr Davis' special adviser Stewart Jackson, said "DD decided he couldn't sell out his own country".

BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said she understands Mr Davis was "furious" after a meeting at Number 10 earlier on Sunday and "concluded he could not stay in post".

She also said she believes another minister will be leaving with Mr Davis and that Environment Secretary Michael Gove is the favourite to replace the Brexit secretary.

On Sunday he told the BBC he was urging Tory MPs to support Mrs May and her Brexit plan.

Some Remain-supporting politicians said the resignation of Mr Davis was evidence of the need for a second referendum.

Baron Adonis, a prominent backer of the move, tweeted: "People's Vote to put Brexit out of its misery a big step closer after DD's resignation. Now the Brexiteers holding Mrs May hostage are falling out, there isn't a majority for any withdrawal treaty in Parliament."

The Liberal Democrats called on people to sign a petition for a vote on the Brexit deal, adding: "The resignation of David Davis is yet more evidence of the chaos of this Tory Brexit. You deserve the final say on this shambolic Brexit with the chance to stay in the EU."

Hommat niin sekaisin että ihan sama. Murehditaan niitä ongelmia sitten kun vahinko on jo tapahtunut. Tai jotain vastaavaa.

Tää on eritoten nykyaikaa. Ei ole enää epäonniatumista tai virheitä. Joten kaikki omat teot (vaikka kyllä ääni brexitille) on vain ja ainoastaan hyvä juttu. Sitten hirttäydytään vaikka siihen typeryyteen kunhan ei näytä tyhmältä instagramissa.
