Helsingin poliisilaitos on sijoittanut keskiviikkoiltana poliiseja vartioimaan eduskunnan toimitiloja Lontoon iskun vuoksi.
Asian vahvistaa sisäministeri Paula Risikko (kok).
”Tällä tavalla pyritään varmistamaan turvallisuutta Lontoon tapahtumien vuoksi”, Risikko sanoo.

Risikko kertoi aiemmin illalla, että suojelupoliisi seuraa Lontoon tapahtumia ja arvioi, onko niillä vaikutuksia Suomen turvallisuustilanteeseen. Hänen mukaansa myös eduskunnan turvatoimia oli määrä tarkastella, jos tiedot antavat siihen aihetta.

Risikko muistutti, että eduskunta on nyt väistötiloissa Eduskuntatalon mittavan remontin vuoksi.
”Siellä on erityisen tarkasti arvioitu turvatoimia ja lisätty turvallisuutta”, Risikko sanoi remontissa olevasta Eduskuntatalosta torstai-iltana.

Pääministeri Juha Sipilä esitti Twitterissä osanottonsa ja tuomitsi Lontoon iskun.

”Surullista ja täysin tuomittavaa”, kommentoi puolustusministeri Jussi Niinistö (ps) Lontoon terrori-iskua keskiviikkona Washingtonissa, jossa hän osallistui ulkoministeri Timo Soinin sijaisena äärijärjestö Isisin vastaiseen huippukokoukseen.

Terrori-isku tapahtui kesken kokouksen, ja Niinistö kertoi keskustelleensa siitä tuoreeltaan Britannian ulkoministerin Boris Johnsonin kanssa.
”Hän painotti sitä, että kyse on rikollisesta toiminnasta, jota ei pitäisi mystifioida”, Niinistö sanoi viitaten siihen, että jotkut puhuvat mieluummin islamilaisesta terrorismista. Hän sanoi monen asian Lontoon iskussa viittaavan Isisin toimintaan.

Puolustusministerin mukaan on mahdoton sanoa, oliko Lontoon isku tarkoituksellisesti Brysselin iskujen vuosipäivänä ja samaan aikaan huippukokouksen kanssa.
”Saammeko koskaan tietääkään”, hän sanoi viitaten siihen, että tekijä on kuollut.

Poliisi on pidättänyt Antwerpenissa miehen, joka yritti ajaa autolla ihmisten päälle.

Autossa oli ilmeisesti ranskalaiset rekisterikilvet. Mies yritti ajaa kovalla vauhdilla ihmisten päälle suositulla ostoskadulla.

Tunisian suspect charged with terror offences after driving at high speed into crowded shopping area in port city

A man has been charged with terror offences including attempted murder after he was arrested driving at high speed into a crowded shopping area in the Belgian port city of Antwerp.

However, a source close to the investigation told AFP that investigators could not confirm if it was a terrorist attack and said the driver made little sense during interrogation.

Other sources said the charges could be interpreted as a “precautionary measure” to keep the suspect in detention.

The suspect, a 39-year-old Tunisian identified as Mohamed R, was charged with “an attempt to murder in a terrorist manner, an attempt to hit and wound in a terrorist manner and arms infractions”, the federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The authorities said they found a rifle and bladed weapons in the car after they arrested the suspect on Thursday.

The incident came a day after an attack on the British parliament killed four people plus the attacker. Wednesday was also the first anniversary of the Brussels suicide bombings in which 32 people died.

Mohamed R drove at high speed through the busy Meir shopping area in Antwerp, forcing people to jump out of the way, authorities said. He also ignored an initial order to stop by soldiers.

The Antwerp incident put Europe further on edge after the London attack and the incident at Paris’s Orly airport last Saturday, when a man was shot dead after grabbing a soldier’s rifle.

Investigators said the man in Antwerp was clearly “under the influence of something” but it was not clear what substance.

He was not in a state to be questioned by police until Friday, a source said. “His explanation made no sense” and “it is not confirmed that it amounts to a terrorist attack”, the source added.

“Recently, he lived in his car – given the mess we found in there – between Belgium and the Netherlands where he was also checked by police.”

Interrogated by French police, a friend of the suspect’s said the weapon in the boot of the car had been there for a long time and did not work.

The Belgian federal prosecutor’s office said the suspect was driving at “very high speed” and that “at different times pedestrians were placed in danger”.

The Belgian prime minister, Charles Michel, praised security services in the Flemish-speaking city for doing “an excellent job”.

A French source close to the investigation said the man had spent the night in a holding cell on the eve of the incident before being released on Thursday morning.

A woman close to the suspect had called the police on Wednesday evening complaining that he had stolen her bag, the source added.

Meir is the main commercial street in Antwerp’s historic centre and is mostly pedestrianised. It is one of the country’s biggest shopping areas.

Belgium has been on high alert since 22 March last year when suicide bombers attacked Zaventem airport and Maalbeek metro station, killing 32 people and leaving more than 320 wounded.

Belgium suffered a further shock in August when a machete-wielding man shouting “Allahu akbar” (God is greatest) attacked two police officers in the industrial town of Charleroi, before being shot dead.

London attack: Who was Khalid Masood?

The man police say was responsible for the Westminster attack has been formally identified as 52-year-old Khalid Masood.

He is believed to have had at least three children.

The Metropolitan Police says he was born as Adrian Russell Ajao - but the story appears to be more confusing still, because of a string of alternative names or aliases he used.

He was entered onto the birth registry in the Dartford district of Kent as Adrian Russell Elms, in the weeks after he was born on Christmas Day 1964.

Elms was his mother's maiden name, but two years after he was born she married a man with the name Ajao.

The future killer used the surnames interchangeably before he converted to Islam and became Masood.

Westminster attacker Khalid Masood had interest in jihad – police

Met says there is no evidence Masood, who killed four people in London, was directed by Islamic State

Khalid Masood, who killed four people in the Westminster attack, had a clear interest in jihad and his method echoed the rhetoric of Islamic State leaders, Scotland Yard has said.

Metropolitan police deputy assistant commissioner Neil Basu, senior national coordinator for UK counter-terrorism policing, said on Monday there was no evidence yet that Kent-born Masood, 52, had discussed his plans with others.

But Basu made clear that the attacker’s communications on 22 March – when he drove a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and killed a police officer guarding the Palace of Westminster – were a main line of inquiry.

The Met’s comments came as Masood’s mother, Janet Ajao, released a statement saying: “I do not condone his [Masood’s] actions nor support the beliefs he held that led to him committing this atrocity.”

She added: “I am so deeply shocked, saddened and numbed by the actions my son has taken that have killed and injured innocent people in Westminster. Since discovering that it was my son that was responsible I have shed many tears for the people caught up in this horrendous incident.

“I wish to make it absolutely clear, so there can be no doubt, I do not condone his actions nor support the beliefs he held that led to him committing this atrocity. I wish to thank my friends, family and community from the bottom of my heart for the love and support given to us.”

Masood was shot dead by a protection officer last Wednesday on the forecourt of the Palace of Westminster. His attack claimed the lives of PC Keith Palmer, American tourist Kurt Cochran, Aysha Frade, a British teacher of Spanish origin, and Leslie Rhodes, a 75-year-old window cleaner.

In a public appeal, Basu said: “If you heard from him on 22 March, please come forward now. The information you have may prove important to establishing his state of mind.”

“His attack method appears to be based on low-sophistication, low-tech, low-cost techniques copied from other attacks, and echo the rhetoric of IS leaders in terms of methodology and attacking police and civilians, but at this stage I have no evidence he discussed this with others.

“There is no evidence that Masood was radicalised in prison in 2003, as has been suggested; this is pure speculation at this time. Whilst I have found no evidence of an association with IS or AQ [al-Qaida], there is clearly an interest in jihad.”

Scotland Yard confirmed that in 2005 he changed his name from Adrian Ajou to Khalid Masood. At that time he had recently married Farzana Malik, a Muslim marketing assistant, in Medway, Kent.

“His last criminal offence was 2003 and he was not a current subject of interest or part of the current domestic or international threat picture for either the security service or counter-terrorism policing,” Basu said. “I know when, where and how Masood committed his atrocities, but now I need to know why. Most importantly, so do the victims and families.”
