White supremacists behind majority of US domestic terror attacks in 2020

Data stands in stark contrast to claims by Donald Trump, who has argued that leftwing violence is a major threat

White supremacists and other rightwing extremists have been responsible for 67% of domestic terror attacks and plots so far this year, with at least half of that violence targeting protesters, according to a new analysis from a centrist thinktank.

The report found only a single deadly “far-left” attack in 2020, the shooting of Aaron Danielson, a rightwing activist, by a self-described “anti-fascist” during a protest in Portland this August. Experts on extremism said this was the first killing linked to an anti-fascist in the United States in 25 years.

Violent rightwing actors were responsible for 41 politically motivated attacks and plots this year, while “far-left” actors were responsible for 12, according to analysts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), who have assembled a database of domestic terror attacks going back to 1994.

The new data stands in stark contrast to claims by Donald Trump and justice department officials, who have responded to massive protests against police violence and racism by arguing that leftwing violence is a major threat, and that anti-fascist, or “antifa”, activists should be designated as a domestic terror group.

Despite months of political unrest, a much smaller number of Americans have been killed in domestic terrorism incidents this year than in previous years, CSIS analysts found, in part because there has not yet been a politically motivated mass shooting.

In total, only five people died in five domestic terror incidents this year through 31 August, the analysts concluded, including Danielson, a supporter of the far-right Patriot Prayer group. The other deaths include two law enforcement officers shot dead by an anti-government “boogaloo” extremist in California; the son of a New Jersey judge shot to death by an anti-feminist terrorist; and a Black Lives Matter protester shot dead during a protest in Austin, Texas.

In recent years, the annual number of victims of domestic terrorism attacks has been much higher, ranging from 22 to 66 people, according to the CSIS database, with single incidents, such as the mass shooting targeting Latinos in an El Paso Walmart last year, or the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando in 2016, leaving dozens of people dead.

Some high-profile incidents are not included in CSIS’s tally of domestic terrorism attacks, including the shooting deaths of two Black Lives Matter protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, this August.

In the Kenosha incident, the analysts did not see a clear “political motivation” by the alleged 17-year-old shooter, or evidence that the killings had been premeditated, said Seth Jones, the counter-terrorism expert who led the creation of CSIS’s dataset.

But Jones said it was noteworthy “how much domestic terrorism in the US shifted over the summer of 2020 into cities”, with a noticeable increase in the number of car attacks on protesters, and in street violence.

One of the fatal incidents that was coded as “violent far-right” domestic terrorism in the CSIS database was carried out by an army sergeant in Texas who has not yet faced any criminal charges in the case.

Garrett Foster was shot to death during a Black Lives Matter protest in Austin, Texas, on 25 July. Daniel Perry, the army sergeant who was named as the shooter, has claimed he was acting in self-defense.

The CSIS report cites a series of social media comments Perry made in the months before the shooting, including, “Now is the time to take up arms and protect yourselves against violence”, and a response to a Trump tweet about protesters in Oklahoma, “Send them to Texas we will show them why we say don’t mess with Texas”, in categorizing the shooting as politically motivated terrorism.

Clint Brody, a lawyer for Perry, criticized the authors of the report for trying “to equate an act of self-defense with domestic terrorism”, and said that Foster, the protester who was killed, had also made troubling posts on social media.

Asked for comment, the Austin police department and local district attorney’s office said only that the investigation was ongoing.

The 11 non-fatal incidents analysts coded as “far-left political violence” include the burning of a police precinct in Minneapolis that was known locally as “a playground for renegade cops”; attempts to set police cars on fire in New York City and Tacoma, Washington; molotov cocktail and other incendiary attacks on government buildings in Portland, Seattle, and Apple Valley, Minnesota; and an assault on a Democratic state senator who was filming protesters tearing down statues in Wisconsin.

The non-fatal rightwing attacks include a knife attack that wounded three members of an Asian-American family in Texas; a shooting at a shopping center in Arizona by a man prosecutors said was part of the misogynistic “incel” movement; multiple terror plots by The Base, a neo-Nazi group trying to instigate a race war; and several threats and violent incidents linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory.

CSIS defines terrorism as “the deliberate use – or threat – of violence by non-state actors in order to achieve political goals”, and analysts cautioned that they had omitted many violent incidents in 2020 in which the political motivation was not clear.

For instance, “though some sources recorded over 100 far-right vehicle attacks at protests in 2020”, the CSIS database only “verified 11 as terrorist attacks”, the analysts wrote.

The percentage of rightwing domestic terrorism attacks would have been higher if CSIS had categorized “boogaloo” anti-government extremists as rightwing, as many experts do. Instead, they classified the emerging violent movement as “other”.

The New America Foundation, a liberal thinktank that maintains a database of fatal domestic terrorism incidents since 9/11, agreed with CSIS that the Portland shooting should be seen as an act of “far-left wing” terrorism, but categorized the Kenosha shooting as an incident of far-right violence.

While it is possible to debate the classification of specific cases, Jones said, the broader trend in the data is clear: white supremacists and similar actors pose the greatest domestic terror threat to the United States today, a finding that is consistent across multiple databases maintained by researchers who track extremist violence, and that was recently confirmed by a Department of Homeland Security threat assessment, which said that white supremacists “remain the most persistent and lethal threat in the homeland”.

Golden Dawn deputy leader evades arrest after jail sentence

Greek neo-Nazi ideologue Christos Pappas will not turn himself in, says lawyer

A Greek neo-Nazi ideologue and deputy leader of the Golden Dawn party evaded arrest on Friday as dozens of fellow members headed to prison following a group conviction.

Christos Pappas, whose father played a key role in a 1967 military coup, has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison for his role in running Golden Dawn as a criminal organisation.

His lawyer on Friday said he would not turn himself in, and a search of at least five homes linked to Pappas has failed to locate him, state TV ERT said.

The former furniture store owner, whose lieutenant-general father helped install dictator Georgios Papadopoulos in 1967, is an admirer of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and collector of fascist memorabilia.

Pappas, 58, had also evaded arrest in 2013, when senior Golden Dawn members had been rounded up following the murder of the anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas, the crime that led to the organisation’s undoing.

The Golden Dawn trial, which began in 2015, has been described as one of the most significant in Greek political history.

The organisation’s founder and long-term leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, has also been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison, alongside several senior party members.

Michaloliakos’s wife and other party cadres and members received lesser sentences. Some of them have walked free pending their appeal.

The Golden Dawn convicts will be shared out between at least four prisons, ERT said Friday.

The former fringe party won 18 seats in parliament in 2012 after tapping into anti-austerity and anti-migrant anger during Greece’s decade-long debt crisis.

It failed to win a single seat in last year’s parliamentary election.

Man who searched for Biden's home had 'execute' on checklist, court says

Alexander Hillel Treisman, who was indicted last month, traveled near Joe Biden’s home and purchased an AR-15

A North Carolina man searched earlier this year for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s home online, traveled near the home and wrote a checklist that ended with the word “execute,” according to federal court documents.

The information was contained in documents related to a detention hearing for Alexander Hillel Treisman, who was indicted last month on child abuse imagery charges, held in US district court in Durham. A magistrate, in an order signed 8 October, ordered Treisman to remain in custody.

An officer with the US Marshal’s Service and the Joint Terrorism Task Force testified that a search of Treisman’s electronic devices and account showed a timeline of internet searches between March and May of this year seeking information about Biden’s home address, state gun laws, rifle parts and night vision goggles.

The officer also said the search turned up a meme Treisman posted in April with the caption “should I kill joe biden?” as well as purchasing an AR-15 in New Hampshire, according to the document. It also said the search determined that Treisman had traveled to a fast-food restaurant within four miles (6km) of Biden’s home, and also wrote a checklist note ending with the word “execute”.

The Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday night.

Also found on the man’s cellphone was a video shot in April as he drove by the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, where a mass shooting killed 58 people and injured more than 800 at an open-air concert in 2017, according to the court document. It said a note on the phone described a plan for a mass shooting at a mall food court on Christmas or Black Friday, and there were still images from video footage of the mosque shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand, in which 51 worshippers were killed in 2019.

The discoveries began with a report of an abandoned van. An FBI special agent testified that workers at a Kannapolis bank branch reported the van in the parking lot. Police officers looking inside the van saw an AR-15-style rifle, a box for a Taurus .380 handgun, a canister of the explosive material Tannerite and a box of 5.56 caliber ammunition, according to the documents.

The agent said in the records that a search of the van revealed approximately $509,000 in cash; books on survival, bomb making, improvised weapons and Islam, drawings of swastikas and planes crashing into buildings. The search also turned up additional firearms, according to the agent.

The agent testified that Treisman had gone to the bank and asked about the van. Bank employees called police, who took him into custody. A search of the car Treisman used to get to the bank turned up two more guns and three fake driver’s licenses for Washington, Florida and California, according to court records.

In relation to the child abuse imagery charges, authorities said, a warrant showed that a search of three laptops, three hard drives, an additional cellphone and a flash drive found 1,248 videos, 6,721 images of child abuse content and 637 videos and images of child abuse containing sadism and/or masochism content.

A lawyer for the man couldn’t immediately be located late Thursday.

Man shot dead in Avignon after threatening public with weapon

It comes on same day three are killed at church in Nice

A man has been shot dead by police after threatening people with a handgun in a city in southern France.

The man was shot dead in Montfavet, a district in the city of Avignon, on Thursday, police said.

A police official told The Independent the attacker said he was from the far-right Mouvance Identitaire.

He was killed after he refused to drop his weapon and a flash-ball shot failed to stop him, a police official told The Associated Press.

French media reports had initially suggested he had shouted “Allahu akbar”, suggesting it was an Islamist attack.

Le Figaro newspaper quoted a prosecution source as saying the man was undergoing psychiatric treatment, and that they did not believe there was a Islamist terrorism motive.

The man appeared to be wearing a jacket displaying a “Defend Europe” logo, which refers to a string of anti-refugee operations by the Generation Identity group.

The pan-Europe white nationalist network, which is called Génération identitaire in France, spreads a conspiracy claiming that white people are being “replaced” and calls for the “remigration” of Muslims from the continent.

The Christchurch attacker, who massacred 51 victims at mosques in New Zealand last year, used the name of Generation Identity’s core ideology as the title of his manifesto.

It later emerged that he had donated money to the group and exchanged friendly emails with Austrian leader Martin Sellner.

On Thursday, Sellner posted a photo of the Avignon attacker’s body on his channel on the encrypted messaging service Telegram.

“People are now claiming that he is ‘part of the Identitarian Movement’,” Sellner wrote. “He was wearing a jacket from the [Generation Identity] shop that was freely available online.”

Sellner, who was banned from entering the UK on security grounds in 2018, suggested the man was mentally ill and “incoherent”.

In a statement released on Thursday evening, Generation Identity denied the man was a member of its French faction.

“The man was neither a participant in the 2018 action in the Alps nor a member,” said a statement. “The Identitarian Movement has always distanced itself from terror and violence and follows the principle of non-violent activism.”

Senior members of Generation Identity’s French branch were jailed last year over parts of Defend Europe mission, and authorities have previously considered a ban on the group...

Poliisi: Ranskan Avignonissa hyökännyt asemies kuului äärioikeistolaiseen ryhmään
perjantai 30.10.2020 klo 1:14
Ranskan poliisi on oikonut tietoja Avignonissa ohikulkijoita uhkailleesta asemiehestä.

Poliisi ampui käsiaseen kanssa ohikulkijoita uhanneen miehen Etelä-Ranskassa sijaitsevassa Avignonin kaupungissa torstaina aamupäivällä. Mies kuoli tapahtumapaikalla.

Aiemmin torstaina Nizzassa iskenyt veitsimies surmasi kolme ihmistä. Avignonin hyökkäys tapahtui noin kaksi tuntia Nizzan iskun jälkeen.

Teen neo-Nazi satanist spared jail after admitting terror offences

A teenage satanist neo-Nazi has has been given a suspended sentence after police found bomb-making manuals and extremist propaganda on his laptop.
Harry Vaughan, 18, was today sentenced at the Old Bailey to two years at a young offender’s institution, suspended for two years. The son of a House of Lords clerk, Vaughan had an ‘extreme right-wing and racist mindset’ and ‘an interest in explosives, firearms and violence’, the court heard. He was a member of the online neo-Nazi forum Facist Forge, where he uploaded self-made propaganda images to promote the now-banned terrorist organisation Sonnenkrieg Division.

These posters were emblazoned with the slogans: ‘It’s ok to be a Nazi’ and ‘Every girl loves a terrorist’. He also applied to join another another British group – System Resistance Network – an alias of the neo-Nazi terror group National Action. In his application he stated he would ‘do anything if he thought it essential to the cause.’ The A-star student, who went to the prestigious London’s Tiffin Grammar School, was said to have ‘fallen down a rabbit hole’ of the internet and had been in a ‘very dark place’ since the age of 14.

Police said his case ‘illustrates it is possible for any young person to be susceptible to radicalisation’. Vaughan was arrested at his house in Twickenham, south west London, in June last year as part of a counter-terror probe into Fascist Forge. Police seized his laptop and found 4,200 images and 302 files on Satanism, anti-Semitism, and neo-Nazism including a bomb making manual. He was also found to have downloaded two videos of child abuse which were classified in the most serious ‘A category.’

Appearing at Westminster Youth Court in September the teenager pleaded guilty to 12 counts of possessing documents useful for terrorism, one count of encouraging terrorism, one count of disseminating terrorist material, and two counts of making indecent images of children. At this earlier hearing prosecutor Dan Pawson-Pounds said Vaughan had looked on Google maps for the locations of schools near his home and searched for explosives and plastic pipes. He said: ‘The material demonstrated unequivocally that Vaughan had an entrenched extreme right-wing and racist mindset, as well as an interest in explosives, firearms and violence more generally. ‘He also demonstrated an interest in the occult and Satanism.’

Mitigating, Naeem Mian QC, said Vaughan’s ‘loving, committed parents’ had been left with a ‘sense of bewilderment’ after his arrest, while specialists have since diagnosed their son with high-functioning autism. He said: ‘He is somebody who has disappeared down a rabbit hole, a rabbit hole of the internet, and he is in a very, very dark place, or certainly was. ‘And he was there, it would appear, from the age of about 14. This is perhaps an ideal illustration of the dangers each and every parent has to deal with, potentially. ‘We cannot be sure where they are going, what they are doing, in their bedrooms. That is the position the parents of this young man have found themselves in. They have questioned themselves. Are they to blame?’

Sentencing, Mr Justice Sweeney said while the defendant had documents on explosives, there was no suggestion he was preparing to manufacture it himself. The judge took account of the defendant’s young age and his diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder. Along with the suspended sentence, he handed Vaughan a 60-day rehabilitation order and a terrorist notification order for 10 years. Jenny Hopkins, head of the special crime and counter terrorism division of the CPS, said: ‘Harry Vaughan was an A-grade student at a prestigious grammar school in south London who chose to pursue his obsession with racist, far-right politics online. ‘The material found on his laptop and mobile phone was overwhelming and he pleaded guilty. ‘This case reinforces once again there isn’t just one type of person who engages in terrorism in the UK, and shows the hard work of the criminal justice system in holding these people to account.’

Local Arkansas police chief quits after calling for violence against Democrats

Lang Holland of the small town of Marshall posted on social media that ‘Marxist Democrats’ had ‘no right to live in this Republic’

An Arkansas police chief resigned on Saturday, after posts under his name and picture advocating violence towards Democrats were found on Parler, a rightwing social media app.

One of Lang Holland’s posts reflected Donald Trump’s baseless allegations that the presidential election he lost to Joe Biden was stolen, and said: “Death to all Marxist Democrats.”

Holland, who led the police department in Marshall, Arkansas, also wrote “take no prisoners” and “leave no survivors”.

Another post stated that people encountering a “Marxist Democrat” in public should “get in their face do not give them peace”, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported.

“Throw water on them at restaurants,” the post said. “Push them off sidewalks. Never let them forget they are traitors and have no right to live in this Republic after what they have done.”

Marshall’s mayor, Kevin Elliott, said Holland apologized for causing trouble.

“I called in the Arkansas Municipal League [and] my attorneys,” the mayor said, “I got some advice on the steps I need to take and the proper direction I need to go. I called Mr Holland in, and he resigned as police chief.”

Holland held the role in Marshall, population 1,355, for two years. Elliott said he was surprised by the posts.

“He’s done excellent,” the mayor said. “I’ve been with the city of Marshall for 26 years and, by far, he’s been the best police chief that I’ve ever seen. I don’t [do] social media, but I was notified last night and all day today and got a bunch of posts and pictures to me.”

Arkansas’s governor, Asa Hutchinson, a Republican, called the posts “dangerous”.

After the posts started circulating on Twitter and Facebook, another Parler account with the username “Chieflangholland” emerged, Arkansas’s ABC 7 TV station reported.

The new account claimed to be run by “the real chief” and said the other account was a fake, the station said, posting screenshots on Twitter. By Saturday, neither account was live. The police department Facebook page appeared to have been taken down.

Holland opposed a mask mandate in Arkansas, which is suffering under the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I Chief Lang Holland feel this order is a very large overreach of the powers given to the state government by the citizens of the state of Arkansas,” he wrote in a memo published to the department Facebook page in July.

“Therefore the Marshall police department will take NO enforcement action of any kind this includes arrest or citation by anyone who is not wearing a mask while out in public.”

On Monday, Holland could not be reached for comment.

Trial begins of man who admitted killing 10 in Toronto van attack

Judge-only trial will focus on mental state of Alek Minassian, 28, and his association with misogynistic ‘incel’ ideology

The trial of Canadian man who killed 10 people when he drove a van on to a crowded Toronto sidewalk will begin on Tuesday, and is expected to focus on questions of criminal responsibility, misogyny and mental illness.

Alek Minassian, 28, faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder over the April 2018 attack, the worst mass murder in the city’s history.

Because he has admitted to the killings, the judge-only trial will instead focus on Minassian’s state of mind at the time of the attack.

Minassian’s lawyers are expected to argue that he suffers from a yet-undisclosed mental illness and, on a balance of probabilities, didn’t comprehend the distinction between right and wrong when he veered on to the sidewalk.

Both the Crown and defence teams are expected to rely heavily on the testimony of medical and mental health experts.

The Toronto-based lawyer Angela Chaisson, who has participated in a number of trials centred on criminal responsibility, said it was extremely rare for Canadian judges to determine that a defendant was not criminally responsible for their actions.

“Most lay people buy into the Hollywood version, where unscrupulous people claim insanity and they get off. And it’s just not accurate,” said Chaisson. “In fact, the consequences of being found not criminally responsible can be, and often are, more severe than life in prison.”

Alongside the question of his mental state, a key element of Minassian’s trial is likely to be his association with the so-called “incel” ideology of men united by sexual frustration and a hatred of women.

Following his arrest in April, Minassian told police officers that he was a virgin who had never had a girlfriend, admitted to using the van as a weapon and said he wanted to inspire more attacks.

Asked how he felt about the deaths, he replied: “I feel like I accomplished my mission.” Eight of the 10 killed were women.

The trial, long delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, will be streamed over Zoom.

A space at the Toronto Convention Centre has been set aside for the public to follow the proceedings, which are expected to last four weeks.

Dutch police arrest man over Saudi embassy shooting

No injuries after shots fired at building in The Hague day after attack on WW1 event in Jeddah

Dutch police have arrested a man after multiple shots were fired at the Saudi embassy in The Hague, causing damage but no injuries.

The incident occurred the day after a bomb exploded at a first world war commemoration attended by foreign diplomats in the Saudi city of Jeddah.

The 40-year-old suspect was detained in Zoetermeer, 10 miles (16km) from The Hague, about eight hours after the shooting at 6am.

“Investigation led to the Zoetermeer suspect and the man was arrested in a house in Zoetermeer,” The Hague police said in a statement.

“Police officers also confiscated a passenger car for further investigation. The suspect is detained and will be questioned.”

Police found several bullet casings outside the embassy, they said. Numerous bullet holes could be seen in the windows, an Agence France-Presse journalist said.

The police spokesman Steven van Santen said a forensic examination was under way involving “traces on the bullet holes and the bullets”.

The Saudi embassy confirmed none of its staff were hurt, and said it had advised Saudi citizens in the Netherlands to “exercise caution”.

“Embassy security officers informed security authorities of the incident as soon as it occurred,” the Saudi embassy said in a statement posted on Twitter.

The Saudi government “condemns this cowardly attack, and thanks the Dutch authorities for their prompt response”.

The Dutch foreign ministry said it “takes this very seriously and is in close contact with the Saudi authorities”.

On Wednesday, a bomb at a non-Muslim cemetery in Jeddah hit an Armistice Day commemoration being attended by diplomats from France, Greece, Italy, Britain and the US. At least two people were wounded.

Tech companies under pressure to ban far-right forum used for militia organizing

MyMilitia users have posted threats against protesters and lawmakers, and experts say it’s a dangerous recruitment tool

Pressure is mounting on tech companies to ban MyMilitia, a website used by far-right extremists and armed groups to organize, after it was linked to threats of violence against US protesters and lawmakers this week.

On Tuesday, police arrested Brian Maiorana after he allegedly posted online threats targeting Chuck Schumer, the Democratic minority leader in the US Senate, and threatened to “blow up” the FBI. Maiorana is also alleged to have used MyMilitia, as well as an unnamed mainstream social media platform, to make threats to kill protesters and discussed building his own weapons, according to the complaint. Maiorana, a registered sex offender, is barred from legally purchasing firearms.

The arrest has put more pressure on internet companies that control the infrastructure supporting MyMilitia, including GoDaddy and Cloudflare to ban the platform from their services.

“This is a very dangerous game they are playing, giving people the ability to recruit extremist militias during a perilous political time in our country,” said Matt Rivitz, the co-founder of the online activism and anti-bigotry group Sleeping Giants. “It is shocking to see these companies not only supporting but actively monetizing themselves off of it.”

MyMilitia was first registered with GoDaddy in 2016 by Ohio conservative Chad Embrey, according to internet hosting records reviewed by the Guardian. The website is one of several domains Embrey has bought related to the militia movement. Embrey’s expressed goals for the website include changing the “negative perception” of militias and assisting communities “from all threats foreign or domestic”.

The site further rose to prominence after a man named Michael Hari and other members of his Illinois-based militia allegedly bombed a mosque in Bloomington, Minnesota, and appealed on MyMilitia for others around the country to rally to their defense.

As of early October, the site had at least 20,000 users organizing more than 530 militia groups in the US, according to a report from Vice. It’s also becoming more popular. The site totaled 69,461 visits in October 2020, up 322.6% from October 2019 at 16,437, according to web traffic analytics firm SimilarWeb.

Embrey did not respond to a request for comment. Josh Ellis, whom Embrey sold the site to in April, told the Guardian that MyMilitia has aims of “helping American citizens to create strong organized constitutional militias in every town throughout the USA”.

“Anyone who is against that idea and is requesting to have MyMilitia removed from the internet is an enemy of the USA, an enemy of freedom, and an enemy of every patriotic American citizen,” he said.

The site is particularly dangerous because its explicit purpose is to recruit members and move their activities offline, said Talia Lavin, the author of Culture Warlords: My Journey Into the Dark Web of White Supremacy. MyMilitia has a feature, for example, called “area code militias”, which recruits for hyper-local groups by area code. The website has grown in popularity after Facebook began to crack down more forcefully on militia activity in recent weeks, she added.

“It is very useful to the movement to have websites like this feeding into offline activity,” Lavin said. “These groups are explicitly used to recruit militias, calling for people to be armed, and fomenting civil unrest in their communities.”

In addition to forums for organizing militias, the website has an extensive library of pdfs purporting to be manuals from US army forces on sniper training and other gun operations, and a treatise outlining justifications and strategies for an insurgency in the US. Recent posts include examinations of the short-term prospect of civil war and discussions of election fraud.

PayPal and Venmo banned MyMilitia this week from using their services to raise money, after an outcry online accused tech companies of facilitating violence through their platforms. The website is now raising funds using an account on CashApp, which is owned by Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, as well as self-described Christian crowdfunding site GiveSendGo. GiveSendGo said the militia does not violate its terms of service and it plans to continue hosting MyMilitia fundraising. CashApp did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The domain name for MyMilitia is registered with GoDaddy, and the site itself is hosted through FluidHosting, a Pennsylvania-based cloud server. Neither company responded to request for comment. GoDaddy’s terms of service explicitly ban activity that “promotes encourages or engages in terrorism, violence against people, animals, or property”, but the company has yet to remove the page despite many cited examples of such conduct.

Rivitz pointed out the site runs ads through a partnership with Google Ads, meaning Google is profiting from MyMilitia and companies advertising with Google may be unwittingly advertising their products next to controversial or violent content.

“This is a case of Google going against its own terms of service in and putting their advertisers at risk,” he said. A spokeswoman from Google told the Guardian the company is reviewing the site to see if it violates policies.

“We do not allow ads to run on content that incites violence or hatred,” she said. “This is a longstanding policy, which we enforce vigorously.”.

Cloudflare, which is providing online security to the site, did not respond to request for comment. In 2019, the company cut off services to the far-right message board 8chan, following a public outcry after it was used to post the manifesto of the attacker behind the El Paso mass shooting.

Nandini Jammi, who co-founded the activism group Sleeping Giants and now runs a service that monitors brand safety online, said in the absence of action from host sites like these, she is pursuing other ways to pressure MyMilitia offline. She said users on the site are “extremely violent”.

“The companies need to do everything in their power to remedy the situation,” Jammi said.

MyMilitia’s website runs on a software licensed to them by a company called Invision. Following pressure from Jammi and others, the creator of Invision revoked MyMilitia’s permissions to use the software. But the site is still up, and still using it. Jammi and others are now pressuring the owner of Invision to take legal action to force MyMilitia offline for violating their contract.

Activists have attempted to take MyMilitia offline by going after its financial base, such as PayPal, its infrastructure such as GoDaddy and Cloudflare, and its software. These efforts show just how many actors are involved in keeping the forum online – and how many tech companies are complicit in its existence, Lavin said.

“If you are enabling these websites, you are enabling civil war,” she said. “These tech companies need to decide where they stand, and by not acting, they already have.”
