Holocaust memorial replica stunt shines light on rightwing radicalism in Germany

Art collective likened to ‘terrorist organisation’ by far-right politician Björn Hocke

Members of the art collective Centre for Political Beauty pose inside the replica of Berlin’s Holocaust memorial.

When a group of performance artists erected a replica of Berlin’s Holocaust memorial next to the home of a far-right politician, they were hoping to draw attention to the revisionist views of a rising figure on Germany’s nationalist right.

But as the collective finds itself targeted by the first criminal investigation of its kind against a group of artists in modern German history, their stunt is instead putting the spotlight on the proximity between far-right politics and the public servants in formerly Communist east German states.

In November 2017, art collective Centre for Political Beauty had erected a replica of Berlin’s Holocaust memorial next to the home of Björn Höcke, a leading far-right politician from the Alternative für Deutschland party who has called on Germans to stop atoning for the crimes of the Nazi era.

Höcke, who has dismissed architect Peter Eisenman’s original Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe as “a monument of shame”, unsuccessfully tried to launch criminal proceedings against the artists’ replica, which remains in situ next to his home in Bornhagen, Thuringia.

However, a route parliamentary question by leftwing party Die Linke revealed last week that the state prosecutor in the east German state has for the last 16 months been investigating the art collective’s artistic director, on suspicion of “forming a criminal association”.

The investigation was launched just four days after Höcke likened the Centre for Political Beauty to a “terrorist organisation” in a speech at a gathering of far-right figures, and rests on a legal provision known as paragraph 129, which lends the state far-reaching surveillance powers such as wiretapping.

Other groups investigated under paragraph 129 in Thuringia include members of Isis and the Al-Nusra Front, Holocaust deniers and football hooligans.

The criminal investigation was reportedly launched because the art collective had announced its replica memorial would go hand-in-hand with a surveillance operation targeting the most prominent politician of the AfD’s nationalist wing. A video by the group hails their project as “the most extensive long-term monitoring of rightwing radicalism in Germany”.

The Centre for Political Beauty has a history of staging provocative performances teetering on the edge of illegality. In one of its first stunts in 2009 the group put chancellor Angela Merkel up for auction on eBay.

Since, the group has removed white crosses marking the lives of Germans who lost their lives crossing the Berlin Wall and moved them to the EU’s outer borders, organised a reburial in Berlin of the exhumed body of a Syrian woman who drowned while crossing the Mediterranean, and taken out an ad in a Swiss magazine with the words “Kill Roger Köppel”, a rightwing publicist-turned-politician. In the latter case, a Swiss court ruled that the advert was not a call to murder but covered by artistic freedom of expression.

In the case of the group’s “surveillance” of Höcke’s home, a court in Cologne too ruled last year that their threat should be legally treated as an art performance rather than an intended crime, taking note of the “satirically heightened costumes” including beige trenchcoats and binoculars.

Nonetheless, the state prosecutor in Gera has persisted with his investigation – leading German media and politicians to question whether it was politically motivated.

The AfD, which aggressively styles itself as a law and order party, has managed to attract public servants working at Germany’s courts and for the police. One of Höcke’s leading allies in the Bundestag, delegate Jens Maier, was a district judge in Dresden before he was elected to parliament.

An investigation by newspaper Die Zeit has over the weekend also raised questions about the Gera state prosecutor, Martin Zschächner. While Zschächner is not a member of AfD, the newspaper revealed he made a small donation to the party via a PayPal account in April 2018.

Zschächner did not respond when asked by Die Zeit about the nature of his affiliation with the AfD, but has previously denied his investigation of the Centre for Political Beauty was politically motivated.

Katja Kipping, co-leader of Die Linke, described Zschächner as someone striving to “please the right wing”, and said the prosecutor had previously dismissed a threat by an AfD politician to “roast her on a spit” as mere “grandiloquence” and use of “revolutionary rhetoric”.

“What is truly shocking is that the AfD is already managing to assert an understanding of art that is all too familiar from totalitarian regimes: in their view, artists – and especially political artists – are essentially criminals,” Philipp Ruch, the artistic director of the collective, told the Guardian.

“Some light urgently needs to be shed on this affair,” he added. “The justice ministry has known about this investigation for days, so why has it not acted? Their inaction is the real scandal here.”

While the justice minister of Thuringia has insisted that the investigation of the art collective was “consistent and not politically motivated”, the state’s culture minister has suggested that Zschächner should resign if he was to reflect on the “basic principles that he has sworn a pledge to”.

Thuringia, currently the only German state to be governed by Die Linke in coalition with the Social Democrats and the Green party, faces state elections in October this year. Current polls suggest the AfD could get as much as 20% of the vote.

Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California on Tuesday played a video of controversial comments Candace Owens made on Adolf Hitler and nationalism as the rising conservative star testified on white nationalism at the invitation of GOP lawmakers.

The California lawmaker played the first 30 seconds of remarks Owens made on Hitler at a conference in London late last year.

"I think that the definition gets poisoned by elitists that actually want globalism. Globalism is what I don't want," Owens said at the time. "Whenever we say 'nationalism,' the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler. You know, he was a national socialist, but if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine."

German police raid 30 premises linked to far-right extremists

Alleged target is Inferno Cottbus ’99 group, suspected of criminal activity and neo-Nazism

Police have carried out extensive raids in four German states on premises linked to suspected far-right extremists.

Thirty properties including flats, offices and commercial premises in the states of Brandenburg, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony were searched in the operations which began at dawn and continued into Wednesday afternoon.

Police said that no arrests had been made. They are expected to release more information in a press conference on Thursday morning.

According to German media, the focus of the police’s interests is Inferno Cottbus ’99, an extremist group affiliated with the football club Energie Cottbus that has been under investigation since April 2018.

The raids were requested by the main court in the city of Cottbus, which is investigating the group. Inferno Cottbus ’99 is suspected of involvement in criminal activities including robberies, violence, tax evasion and advertising Nazi symbolism, which is a crime in Germany.

Inferno Cottbus has also been accused of organising riots in the eastern city of Chemnitz last summer, sparked by the murder of a local German-Cuban man. According to the group itself, it broke up in May 2017. But observers of the far-right scene say the disbandment happened on paper only.

Cottbus, a city in the state of Brandenburg, has long been seen as a hotbed of rightwing extremism. The state’s office for the protection of the constitution warned that it had become “toxic”.

According to the Berlin newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, police have identified 20 key suspects. As well as being members of Inferno Cottbus, the suspects are also drawn from martial arts groups, security companies, neo-Nazi outfits, and the “rocker” scene.

Jan Gloßmann, a spokesman for the city of Cottbus, said it was struggling to contain its far-right groups. “We have problems with rightwing extremism and its structures,” he told media on Wednesday.

An estimated 400 people are believed to make up the far-right scene in the city and surrounding areas. Their economic activities include running tattoo parlours, security companies, and far-right music labels as well as selling fashion clothing favoured by the far-right.

Meanwhile, figures from Germany’s ruling Christian Democratic party have called for an MP for the rightwing AfD party to step down after reports that he was working under the influence of the Kremlin.

Media reports alleged that Markus Frohnmaier has been closely working with the Russian government and that the Kremlin has been influencing his political decision-making.

According to the reports, the decision to help Frohnmeier and in return receive favours from him came from the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, who is alleged to have intervened just months before the federal elections in the autumn of 2017. Frohnmeier has denied the allegations.

Republican discussed violent attacks and surveillance with rightwingers

Washington state representative Matt Shea exchanged messages with far-right figures, chat records obtained by the Guardian reveal

Image
Antifa members form a circle and surround helmeted members of a rightwing and pro-Trump group during the 2019 Women’s March at Boston Common in Boston, Massachusetts, on 19 January.

A Washington state Republican politician took part in private discussions with rightwing figures about carrying out surveillance, “psyops” and even violent attacks on perceived political enemies, according to chat records obtained by the Guardian.

State representative Matt Shea, who represents Spokane Valley in the Washington state house, participated in the chats with three other men. All of the men used screen aliases – Shea’s was “Verum Bellator”, Latin for true warrior. The Guardian confirmed the identity of those in the chat by cross-checking phone numbers attached to the Signal accounts.

The group included Jack Robertson, who broadcasts a far-right radio show, Radio Free Redoubt, under the alias “John Jacob Schmidt”. The chat also included Anthony Bosworth, whose history includes a public altercation with his own daughter and bringing guns to a court house. Bosworth participated in the 2016 occupation of the Malheur national wildlife refuge, reportedly at Shea’s request.

The name of another participant, who provided the chat records to the Guardian, has been withheld due to concerns about personal safety.

The chats on the messaging app Signal took place in the days leading up to a supposed “Antifa revolt” on 4 November 2017. Throughout late October, far-right media outlets had been stoking fears of political conflict on the basis of planned peaceful protests by a small leftist group.

The men proposed to confront leftists – whom they repeatedly refer to as “communists” and “Antifa” – with a suite of tactics, including violence.

Image

Other acts of extreme violence were also suggested. When a specific female Spokane resident was nominated for surveillance in the chat group, Robertson suggested:

Image

Apart from violence, the men extensively discussed tactics of surveillance and intimidation.

Image

Shea, the elected Republican legislator, did not demur from any of these suggestions. He also appeared willing to participate directly in surveillance of activists.

In response to a request in the chat for background checks on Spokane residents, Shea volunteered to help, going on to name three individuals – including an organizer for the liberal group Indivisible, and a college professor.

Image

The men talked about the broad outlines of what they appeared to consider to be a looming civil war. They also discussed using symbols from what they understood to be Russian anti-communist groups as a way of spreading paranoia among their adversaries.

The group talked about making stickers and cards using skull and crossbones images from post-revolutionary Russian nationalist groups. After posting an image of a white army soldier holding such a banner, Bosworth remarked:

Image

When the leftist revolt failed to materialize, Shea did not rethink his conspiratorial views and instead blamed the weather.

Image

Shea, a six-term legislator and military veteran, came to international attention in 2018 after a document he authored surfaced laying out a “biblical basis for war”, which appeared to be a plan for an apocalyptic battle with people who practiced “same sex marriage” and “abortion”, and instructed: “If they do not yield, kill all males.”

Shea denied that the document meant what it appeared to say.

At that time, Shea lost donors, and he was stripped of his role as chair of the Republican caucus – though he was serving in this position at the time of the leaked chat.

But Shea has since regrouped, introducing bills to criminalize abortion and roll back gun laws, which other Republicans in Washington have supported. He has also continued pushing a plan for eastern Washington to secede and reconstitute as Liberty State. Robertson has also been a key architect of this campaign, and he and Shea have been regular guests on each other’s broadcasts.

Shea has long promoted conspiratorial views about the cooperation of leftists and Muslims in creating “counter-states” in the US. He has associated with conspiracy-minded far-right groups, and later this month will emcee a dinner for the anti-communist John Birch society in Couer D’Alene, Idaho.

In a telephone conversation with the Guardian, Robertson said: “I remember a discussion in response to Indivisible and Antifa groups that were planning to take to the streets,” but “I don’t recall the details”.

He denied surveilling his political opponents, but added: “If someone is in my community and they are threatening violence, I want to know more about them. That just makes sense.”

He also claimed that the apparent threats of violence were not authentic.

“A lot of people in private conversations say things tongue in cheek about what they would like to see happen to these people, but that is not setting a policy or establishing a protocol for people to carry things out.”

Some of Shea’s most prominent critics have been political conservatives. Spokane county’s Republican sheriff, Ozzie Knezovich, has repeatedly criticized Shea’s far-right ties.

“It’s part and parcel of what this group has been saying for years. I think if a state representative is condoning violence against his constituents then that person needs to be removed from office, and I hope the voters will do that at the next election.

“Matt Shea is a poor representative for the Republican party. Extremism on both sides is tearing this country apart,” Knezovich added.

Asked if the people around Shea were dangerous, Knezovich said: “Yes.”

The Western States Center, a progressive organization, has also previously criticized Shea. Its executive director, Eric Ward, said via email: “The violent extremism that Representative Matt Shea espouses is a clear threat to our democratic institutions and has no place in mainstream political discourse.

“We call on Washington State Republican Party leaders to censure Representative Shea if these allegations are true.”

Shea did not respond to a request for comment.

After the Guardian contacted Robertson and Shea for comment Robertson spoke on Thursday night on the Spokane Christian radio station on which he and Shea broadcast weekly programs.

In a rambling broadcast, Robertson confirmed the existence of the chats, called the Guardian a “propagandist”, read biblical accounts of war and followed with: “If it comes time for war and it’s forced upon you, do you not want a leader who is going to surround himself with warriors? I do.

“There was talk about doing surveillance on some of these Antifa people. Not surveillance but just start copying and pasting their comments, keeping track of who’s who, keep track of where they live, where they work, but that never came to fruition,” he added.

FBI: Lauantaina pidätetty siirtolaisia jahdanneen aseryhmän johtaja suunnitteli Obaman ja Hillary Clintonin murhaamista
Yhdysvaltain etelärajalla partioiva aseistautunut United Constitutional Patriots on kansalaisoikeusjärjestöjen mukaan ”fasistinen miliisijärjestö”, joka ottaa kiinni siirtolaisia lainvalvojiksi tekeytyen.

Siirtolaisia Yhdysvaltain etelärajalla jahtaavan aseryhmän johtaja retosteli aikomuksella murhata entinen Yhdysvaltain presidentti Barack Obama, liittovaltion poliisi FBI epäilee maanantaina julkaistujen syytekirjelmien mukaan.

Asiasta kertoi uutistoimisto Reuters.

Maastopuvuissa Meksikon-vastaisella rajalla partioiva UCP väittää ottaneensa kiinni kansalaispidätyksinä noin 5 600 siirtolaista kahden kuukauden aikana.

Politician from Hitler's home town resigns over 'deeply racist' poem

Christian Schilcher’s poem about immigration is described as ‘abominable’, ‘disgusting’ and ‘inhuman’

Christian Schilcher apologised for the ‘historically charged’ comparison between human beings and rats.

The deputy mayor of Adolf Hitler’s home town has resigned after publishing a poem about immigration whose imagery was described by Austria’s chancellor as “disgusting, inhuman and deeply racist”.

Christian Schilcher, the deputy mayor of Braunau am Inn, published his poem in the Easter edition of a local newspaper affiliated to his far-right Freedom party.

The poem, Die Stadtratte (Nagetier mit Kanalisationshintergrund), roughly translates as The City Rat (Rodent with Sewerage Background).

The title is a play on words referring to a categorisation, “person with migrant background”, commonly used in German-language media and government correspondence for ethnic minority or mixed race citizens.

The poem’s rodent narrator advises migrants to to integrate or “quickly hurry away”.

Austria’s chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, has demanded that the Freedom party – with which his own People’s party is in coalition – distance itself from the “abominable” poem, while the Social Democrat leader, Pamela Rendi-Wagner, said she was reminded of the language of National Socialist propaganda.

Schilcher initially defended himself, saying his poem had been designed to “provoke, but not to offend or hate” and apologised for the “historically charged” comparison between human beings and rats.

On Tuesday morning, the Austrian deputy chancellor and Freedom party leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, confirmed Schilcher had resigned over the poem.

While Hitler did indeed liken his political enemies to rats four times in his manifesto, Mein Kampf, some analysts of the Austrian far right said they were more disturbed by the ideas of social Darwinism behind the verses.

“What is truly frightening about the poem is the point it articulates towards the end: that migrants will destroy Austria if they are allowed to mingle with the population,” said Natascha Strobl, an expert on the new Austrian right. “That kind of language is even breaking a taboo within the Freedom party.”

The poem does not liken humans to rats in a derogatory way, but rather posits the animal as a purer embodiment of what it sees as nature’s moral laws. The rat is aghast at human politicians spending money on “integration”, warning that “if you mix two cultures […] it’s as if you destroy them”.

Hitler repeatedly drew comparisons to the animal world in Mein Kampf in order to assert the need for a racially purified German nation, writing: “Every animal mates only with a member of the same species. The titmouse seeks the titmouse, […] the field mouse the field mouse, the dormouse the dormouse.” Any crossing of two beings, he argued, would produce a racially lower being that would be likely “succumb in the struggle” for survival.

Brutaalista rasistisesta murhasta tuomittu John William King, 44, on teloitettu myrkkyruiskeella Teksasissa Yhdysvalloissa.

Vuonna 1998 King murhasi mustaihoisen James Byrdin, 49.

King tarjosi kahden ystävänsä kanssa liftaamassa olleelle Byrdille autokyytiä kotiin sunnuntaisena aamuna. Kyydin sijaan miehet hakkasivat Byrdin, maalasivat hänen kasvonsa ja köyttivät nilkoista auton perään. Miehet vetivät uhriaan autolla noin viiden kilometrin matkan, jonka aikana Byrd kuoli.

Aiemmin, vuonna 2011, Byrdin murhasta teloitettiin toinen syyllinen.
