A white Fort Worth police officer fatally shot a black woman in her home early Saturday, firing through a bedroom window while responding to a call about an open door at the residence, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the house in the city’s Hillside Morningside neighborhood at 2:25 a.m. after receiving an “open structure” call, according to a statement from the Fort Worth Police Department. A neighbor told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he dialed a non-emergency line and requested a welfare check when he noticed that the door was ajar and the lights were on.

While searching the outside of the house, police said, an officer saw someone standing near a window. “Perceiving a threat the officer drew his duty weapon and fired one shot striking the person inside the residence,” police said.

Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police, who said the officers provided emergency medical care.

Body-camera footage released by police Saturday shows two officers walking quietly around the side of the house and peering through two screen doors, then moving down a driveway into a backyard.

One officer approaches a closed first-floor window and shines a flashlight inside, then swiftly raises his gun. “Put your hands up! Show me your hands!” he yells. A split-second later, he fires a shot through the window. He does not identify himself as an officer in the footage.

Lee Merritt, a prominent civil rights attorney in the Dallas area who said he is representing Jefferson’s family, said the officer never should have opened fire. Jefferson was playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew when she heard what she thought was a prowler outside the bedroom window, Merritt wrote in a Facebook post Saturday. When Jefferson went to the window to see what was happening, he wrote, the officer shot her.

Police ban Extinction Rebellion protests from whole of London

City-wide Met police operation begins to clear Trafalgar Square and other protest sites

Police have banned Extinction Rebellion protests from continuing anywhere in London, as they moved in almost without warning to clear protesters who remained at the movement’s camp in Trafalgar Square.

The Metropolitan police issued a revised section 14 order on Monday night that said “any assembly linked to the Extinction Rebellion ‘Autumn Uprising’ ... must now cease their protests within London (MPS and City of London Police Areas)” by 9pm.

Almost immediately, officers moved into Trafalgar Square and demanded that protesters remove their tents. Most XR activists staying at the site had already decamped to Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, south of the river, and only a few dozen tents, along with gazebos and other infrastructure, remained on the square.

More than 1,400 people have been arrested during eight days of XR action, with the threat that anyone defying police orders would be detained.

Until Monday night, Trafalgar Square had been specified by the Met as the only legitimate protest site and officers had been telling protesters to go to the square if they wanted to continue protesting.

Howard Rees, an XR spokesman who was at the scene, told the Guardian that police started clearing Trafalgar Square before even issuing the revised order to protesters. “They gave us the notification: ‘We have started clearing the square’,” Rees said.

“It’s all peaceful. People for the most part are being given the opportunity to move their possessions. But obviously there are a lot of people who have had stuff here who are not actually on site, hence the marquees are full of people’s gear and other people are trying to get it to safety. The police are for the most part watching over that operation.”

On Twitter, the London branch of XR wrote: “Police are clearing peaceful protest in Trafalgar & Vauxhall. They are back-tracking on promises made &, MEPs say, in contravention of UK law, in the national square. This is an emergency, and an outrage. The police must respect the law. This is a democracy.”

Kevin Blowe, the coordinator of the Network for Police Monitoring (Netpol), said the order effectively amounted to a ban on XR without going through the due process that would usually be required. “A ban has to be made by the home secretary,” he said.

“Our reading of it is that the section 14 powers are supposed to be used with caution because people still have a right to protest and potentially this is unlawful, and there is no other way to put it. Take a look at what section 14 says: it’s about restricting a number of people for a particular duration of time. My feeling is that this has to be open to some form of potential legal challenge.”

Scotland Yard said activists were told to cease their protests by 9pm on Monday or face arrest.

Deputy assistant commissioner Laurence Taylor said: “These conditions have been imposed due to the continued breaches of the section 14 condition previously implemented and ongoing serious disruption to the community.

“We have made significant progress in managing Extinction Rebellion’s activity at sites across central London over this past week. Officers have begun the process of clearing Trafalgar Square and getting things back to normal.”

A few XR activists locked themselves in place to slow the police operation, Rees said. Specialist police teams were working to cut them free and arrest them.

It was unlikely that protesters at Trafalgar Square and their equipment would be taken to the alternative camp in Vauxhall, because that site was considered to be full and its security was uncertain as it remained subject to the section 14, Rees said.

He added: “The concern would now be that essentially the police have gone back on their word about us being allowed to stay here, so will Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens be next?”

It came after a day in which scores of protesters were arrested for blocking traffic outside the Bank of England, including a 77-year-old rabbi who was dragged away by officers after refusing to comply with a police order to leave the area.

Hundreds of demonstrators walked into the road outside the Bank of England in the City and sat down early on Monday morning.

The group said: “Extinction Rebellion this morning are disrupting the system bankrolling the environmental crisis. The day of disruption, which will target financial institutions, seeks to highlight the far greater disruption faced by those living in the environments systematically being destroyed by UK-backed companies.

“The ecological damage is global and it is hitting the global south now.” Protesters said they were switching their focus to the financial institutions “funding environmental destruction”.

Nettivideon jakaneelta pojalta rahaa vaatinut konstaapeli sai potkut Helsingin poliisista

Konstaapeli esitti useissa tilanteissa kansalaisille epämääräisiä rahavaatimuksia. Poliisilaitoksen mukaan miehen toiminta on voinut vahingoittaa koko poliisiorganisaation luotettavuutta.


HS on kertonut konstaapelin käytöksestä viime keväänä ja kesänä.

Helsingin poliisi on antanut potkut kansalaisilta rahaa kinunneelle vanhemmalle konstaapelille. Poliisilaitoksen mukaan mies on toiminnallaan osoittanut olevansa soveltumaton tehtäväänsä.

Konstaapeli sai kesäkuussa Helsingin käräjäoikeudessa sakot siitä, että hän oli vaatinut alaikäiseltä pojalta rahaa nettivideosta. Oikeus tuomitsi hänet virkavelvollisuuden rikkomisesta 40 päiväsakkoon.

Video koski tilannetta, jossa konstaapeli oli partiokaverinsa kanssa poistanut erästä miestä Rautatieasemalta vapunaattona 2017. Video ei ollut pojan kuvaama, mutta hän latasi sen nettiin ja kirjoitti otsikon ”Rasistiset poliisit pidättävät nuoren maahanmuuttajan ilman syytä”.

Videosta suuttunut konstaapeli kutsui alaikäisen pojan vanhempineen tyhjään poliisitaloon ja vaati siellä itselleen ja partiokaverilleen ”tonnia mieheen”.

Poliisilaitoksen mukaan konstaapelin menettely on voinut vahingoittaa koko poliisiorganisaation luotettavuutta.

Poliisilaitos huomauttaa, että vaikka käräjätuomio ei ole saanut lainvoimaa, tuomion mukaan on riidatonta, että mies oli esittänyt omaan asiaansa liittyvän korvausvaatimuksen ja järjestänyt sitä koskevan tapaamisen poliisin tiloissa.

Konstaapelin menettelyn moitittavuutta lisää laitoksen mukaan se, että hänet on aiemminkin tuomittu vastaavanlaisesta oman edun tavoitteluun tähtäävästä toiminnasta.

Kanta-Hämeen käräjäoikeus on aiemmin tuominnut konstaapelin 60 päiväsakkoon virkavelvollisuuksien rikkomisesta. Silloin mies oli siviilivaatteissa pysäyttänyt autoilijan valoja vilkuttelemalla, esittäytynyt poliisiksi, pyytänyt autoilijan ajokortin ja hurauttanut matkoihinsa kortti mukanaan. Tuomio ei muuttunut ylemmissä oikeusasteissa.

Lisäksi yksi tapaus jäi syyttäjän pöydälle, koska kyse oli sana sanaa vastaan -tilanteesta. Erään miehen mukaan konstaapeli oli väittänyt hänen kolhineen konstaapelin vaimon autoa pysäköintialueella. Konstaapeli oli uhannut kirjoittaa sakkolapun, jos mies ei maksa sadan euron korvauksia, mies kertoi.

Näiden kahden tapauksen jälkeen Helsingin poliisi erotti konstaapelin kuukauden määräajaksi. Päätös perustui säännökseen, jonka mukaan poliisin on niin virassa kuin yksityiselämässäänkin käyttäydyttävä siten, ettei luottamus poliisille kuuluvien tehtävien asianmukaiseen hoitoon vaarannu.

Konstaapelilla on neljän kuukauden irtisanomisaika. Poliisilaitos on päättänyt pidättää hänet virantoimituksesta myös irtisanomisajaksi, koska hän on soveltumaton toimimaan poliisitehtävissään.

Kun HS kertoi aikaisemmin konstaapelin toiminnasta, toimitukseen otti yhteyttä autoharrastaja, jolla oli miehestä samantapaisia kokemuksia.

Hän kertoi, että konstaapeli oli pysäyttänyt hänet siviilivaatteissa ja vaatinut korvauksia tuulilasinsa rikkoontumisesta. Konstaapeli oli väittänyt, että autoharrastajan peräkärrystä singonnut kivi olisi rikkonut lasin.

Konstaapeli kiisti HS:n haastattelussa pyytäneensä rahaa.

”Ihan höpöhöpöä, ihan satuja joku selittää.”

Konstaapelin mukaan mies oli itse halunnut maksaa korvauksia.

Konstaapeli antoi myös ymmärtää, ettei hän sillä hetkellä olisi ollut syytteessä Helsingin käräjäoikeudessa. Tämä ei ollut totta, vaan puhelun aikaan odoteltiin käräjäoikeuden tuomiota.

Mies päätti puhelun lyömällä luurin toimittajan korvaan.

”Nyt toimittaja puhuu ihan… En kommentoi tätä yhtään mihinkään. Nyt toimittaja puhuu ihan vastoin parempaa tietoa. Hyvästi. Älä soita enää.”

Miehen saamia tuomioita yhdistää kaksi asiaa.

Molemmissa tapauksissa tuomioistuimet totesivat miehen puheet epäluotettaviksi eli katsoivat hänen valehdelleen tapahtumista.

Tuomioistuimet myös arvioivat kummassakin tapauksessa, että miehen toiminta oli horjuttanut kansalaisten luottamusta poliisiin.
