Cases here jump to 70 - outdoor gatherings of over 500 people and indoor gatherings of under 100 people are banned.

March 15: In an unprecedented move in modern Ireland, the pubs are ordered to close just two days before St Patrick's Day.

Ireland was placed on full lockdown with all non essential journeys banned for two weeks.

The only exceptions are for travelling to essential work, to shop for food or household goods, for healthcare appointments, and for vital family reasons.

Travelling to and from work where work is an essential health, social care or other essential service that can't be done from home.

For vital family reasons such as providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people but excluding social family visits.

A further range of non essential services and businesses were instructed to close their doors which included a large number of retail stores, gyms and sports facilities.

The Taoiseach also announced cocooning would be introduced which saw those aged 70 and over confined to their homes.

Lockdown extended for 3 weeks
Minister announces postponement of 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations. All students to be offered the option of accepting Calculated Grades or sitting Leaving Certificate written examinations at a later date. As cases continued to surge and Ireland's death toll climbed the Taoiseach announced that Ireland's lockdown would remain in place for a further 3 weeks until May 5.

The move was accompanied by an announcement from Education Minister Joe McHugh that Leaving Cert exams will be postponed from June until late July or August and Junior Cycle exams are being cancelled and will be replaced with school-based tests at the start of the new school year.

In the coming weeks the government also announced that large gatherings of over 5,000 people would be prohibited until August 31 meaning most music gigs and festivals were forced to be cancelled.

Government's road map is published

After weeks of battling the deadly virus health chiefs began indicating that the curve had been flattened.

However the Taoiseach announced that the majority of restrictions would remain in place for yet another two weeks with some slight easing.

But the country was somewhat relieved as it was revealed that the government had put in place a five stage plan set to begin on May 18 to reopen the country by the end of August.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced a series of changes to the government's roadmap of easing COVID-19 restrictions in Ireland, which he summed up as: "Stay Local".

The Irish Government confirmed that "phase two plus" of easing the COVID-19 restrictions would begin on Monday 8 June.

After a cabinet meeting, phase four of easing COVID-19 restrictions will not go ahead on 10 August.

Pubs, bars, hotel bars, nightclubs and casinos were to stay closed.

Restaurants and pubs serving food will now have to close by 11pm, but takeaways and deliveries can remain open after that time.

Face coverings will be mandatory in all shops and shopping centres from August 10th.

Five countries— Malta, Cyprus, Gibraltar, San Marino and Monaco were removed from the green list of countries that are safe to travel to.

Current restrictions of 50 people in indoor gatherings, 200 at outdoor gatherings will remain in place.

Restrictions announced for Kildare, Laois and Offaly
Taoiseach Michael Martin announced a series of measures for counties Kildare, Laois and Offaly following significant increases of COVID-19 cases in the three counties and stayed in place for two weeks.

Face coverings were made mandatory in all shops, shopping centres, libraries, cinemas, museums, nail salons, hairdressers, dry cleaners, betting stores, tattooists and travel agents, with fines of up to €2,500 or a prison sentence of six months to people who do not comply.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has this evening announced Ireland's Level Five lockdown has been extended until April 5.

Schools and early childcare will return on a phased basis over the month of March but there will be no other significant changes.

This means the 5km rule, the limits on household contacts and the closure of retail, personal services will all remain.

A review will then take place on April 5 when the Government will decide if the country is ready to move out of Level Five.



March 2021

Ireland has been under one of the longest Covid-19 lockdowns in Europe with severe restrictions in place since Christmas.

Unfortunately with a high number of infections still being reported each day Ireland is facing lockdown until at the very least April 5, however there are indications this could go on longer.

April 12
The main change is the 5km limit on non-essential travel will be scrapped. Instead people will be allowed to travel anywhere within their county or, as long as they remain within 20km of their home, across county boundaries.

From May 10:

– Inter-county travel will be permitted.

– Personal services such as hairdressers, barbers and beauty salons will reopen for appointments only.

– Click and collect retail services can resume as well as instore shopping by appointment.

– Museums, galleries and libraries will reopen.

– The number of people permitted to attend religious services including funerals, weddings and masses will increase to 50.

– Indoor receptions will be capped at six people and 15 for outdoor celebrations.

– Three households or up to six people will be able to meet outdoors including in private gardens.

– Vaccinated households can meet with an unvaccinated household indoors (without masks or social distancing) provided they are not at risk of severe illness and there are no more than three households present.

– Three vaccinated households will also be allowed to meet indoors (without masks or social distancing).

– Team sports training for adults in pods of 15 to resume.

From May 17:

– All non-essential retail will be allowed to open.

From June 2:

– Hotels, guesthouses, B&Bs, self-catering accommodation and hostels will be permitted to open.

From June 7:

– All outdoor hospitality in pubs and restaurants can reopen with groups limited to six.

– Gyms, swimming pools and leisure centres will also reopen on this date.

– Sports matches will be permitted from this date, but no spectators will be allowed to attend.

– The number of guests attending a wedding celebration/reception can increase to 25.

– Visiting indoors in private homes will be allowed for visitors from one other household.

A number of higher-risk activities will be considered at the end of June for later in the year including:

– Indoor hospitality (restaurants, bars, nightclubs, casinos).

– Indoor team/group sports including matches, training and exercise classes.

– Mass gatherings/events (including spectators) indoors and outdoors.

siis mistä nyt kiikastaa En tietenkään ole mikään Irlantispesialisti, mutta kotimaisesta uutisoinnista jäi mieleen, että siellä nimenomaan jouluna avattiin paljon paikkoja, jotka olivat aiemmin olleet säpissä. Muistelisin erään Irlannissa asuvan täällä todenneen, että koska pitkän sulun jälkeen hommaa lähdettiin avamaan, niin porukka oli liikenteessä kuin ihmisiä koffinpuitossa aurinkoisena toukokuun päivänä. Silloinhan ei ollut tietoa tästä helpommin tarttuvasta variantista.

Irlanti avasi majoitustoiminnan ja muita palveluja tietyin rajoituksin 4. joulukuuta. Pääministerin edustajan mukaan majoitusala on noudattanut pääosin kansanterveysviranomaisten koronavaatimuksia. Tartuntoja onkin ollut suhteellisen vähän majoitusalalla, kaupassa ja rakennusalalla.

Helposti tarttuvaa, koronaviruksen brittimuunnosta tavattiin Irlannissa ensimmäisen kerran joulupäivänä. Pääministerin edustajan mukaan muunnoksella on ollut merkittävä vaikutus koronavirustapausten kasvuun.

Irlanti höllensi koronarajoitustoimiaan lisää ennen joulua päinvastoin kuin monet muut Euroopan maat. Se salli 18. joulukuuta alkaen muun muassa kahden eri kotitalouden tapaamiset.

Lisäksi Irlantiin lensi 21. joulukuuta ja 3. tammikuuta välisenä aikana 54 000 ihmistä.

– Kunnollista karanteenijärjestelmää ei ollut tuolloin käytössä, Royal Society of Medicine -järjestön epidemiologian osaston johtaja Gabriel Scally sanoi CNN:lle.

Irlanti sulki ravintolat, ruokaa tarjoilevat pubit ja osan liikkeistä joulupäivänä ja on tiukentanut koronatoimia sen jälkeen lisää. Se on sulkenut muun muassa rakennustyömaat, koulut ja lasten päivähoitopaikat.

Irlanti lopetti kuuden viikon yhteiskunnan sulkutilan joulukuussa. Silloin maassa oli yksi parhaista koronatilanteista Euroopassa.

Nyt tilanne on kuitenkin muuttunut ja dramaattisesti. Viime viikolla Irlannissa oli maailman eniten uusia tartuntoja miljoonaa asukasta kohti, kertoo CNN.

Perjantaina maassa kerrottiin 8 248:sta uudesta tartunnasta, mikä on uusi päiväkohtainen ennätys.

Suomessa THL kehotti tiistaina välttämään kaikkea matkustamista Irlantiin, Britanniaan ja Etelä-Afrikkaan. Syynä suositukseen on muuntunut koronavirus, jota on havaittu kaikissa kolmessa maassa.

Mikä ihme meni maassa pieleen?

Siitä väittelevät nyt niin asiantuntijat, poliitikot kuin kansalaisetkin.

Maan pääministeri Micheál Martinin toimisto antaa huimaan tartuntojen nousuun ainakin kolme syytä: viruksen vuodenaikavaihtelun, Britanniassa tavatun ärhäkämmän virusvariantin pääsyn maahan sekä sen, että joulun aikaan kotitaloudet sekottuivat.

Asia ei kuitenkaan ole aivan näin yksinkertainen, CNN:lle huomautetaan pääministerin viestinnästä, vaan tartuntamäärien nousuun on vaikuttanut moni asia.

IRLANTI avasi uudelleen majoituspalvelut ja muita talouden osa-alueita joulukuun neljäntenä päivänä. CNN:lle puhunut pääministerin edustaja toteaa, että kyseiset toimialat noudattavat pääosin terveysviranomaisten määräyksiä ja että tartuntamäärät hotellialalla, jälleenmyynnissä ja rakennusaloilla ovat olleet suhteellisen matalalla.

Aiempaa herkemmin tarttuva viruksen brittivariantti tavattiin Irlannissa ensimmäistä kertaa joulupäivänä. Tällä hetkellä noin 40 prosenttia Irlannin kaikista koronatapauksista on tätä muunnosta.

Siinä missä muut Euroopan maat kielsivät tai ainakin suosittelivat joulun viettämistä vain samassa taloudessa asuvien kanssa, Irlanti koitti jotain muuta. Joulukuun 18. päivästä eteenpäin kotitaloudet saivat ”sekoittua” kahden eri talouden kanssa.

Lisäksi yli 54 000 ihmistä lensi Irlantiin joulukuun 21. ja tammikuun 3. päivän välisenä aikana.

Tuolloin käytössä ei ollut asianmukaista karanteenikäytäntöä, Britannian Roayl Society of Medicine -yliopiston epidemiologian osaston johtaja, pohjoisirlantilainen Gabriel Scally totesi CNN:lle.

– Irlanti ja Britannia ovat koronan kanssa epäonnistuneita saarimaita, kun vertaa muihin. Jouluna ihmisillä oli ymmärrettävä halu palata normaaliin kovan vuoden jälkeen, mutta virus ei sitä tiedä.

Eli varmasti "kaikki auki" on liioittelua, mutta sitä ei kyllä näistä Suomen uutisista voi päätellä. Mutta sitten taas toisaalta:

Kaupassa oli tänään kyllä sen näköinen meininki, että mitään koronaa ei ole koskaan ollutkaan ja veikkaan neljännen aallon olevan aika väkevää kampetta.

Muistelisin erään Irlannissa asuvan täällä todenneen, että koska pitkän sulun jälkeen hommaa lähdettiin avamaan, niin porukka oli liikenteessä kuin ihmisiä koffinpuitossa aurinkoisena toukokuun päivänä. Silloinhan ei ollut tietoa tästä helpommin tarttuvasta variantista.

No siis lyhyessä väittämässä oli kaksi suurta virhettä:

juu, tuohan on ihan totta, että tosi nopeasti noi lähtivät Irlannissa ja Virossa nousuun, MUTTA molemmissa oli about kaikki ihan auki kunnes oli pakko pistää kaikki säppiin ja tietty rokotettujen määrä selkeästi vähemmän kuin nyt

Ja tosiaan, kyllähän tuossa Irlannin ceississä näkee, että aika tosi nopeasti tuohon reagoitiin, eli joulukuun alussa avattiin ja sitten oikeastaan lyhimmässä mahdollisessa ajassa (jos siis oletetaan, että oireet alkavat näkymään 1-2 viikon viiveellä) pistettiin takaisin lock downiin. Merkittävä ero tietysti Irlannin joulukuu 2020 ja Suomi toukokuu 2021 välillä on se, että Suomessa merkittävä osa riskiryhmistä on saanut rokotuksen (eli useimmissa tapauksissa Phizerin, jossa näyttäisi ensimmäisen rokotuksenkin "sen kypsyttyä kehossa" jälkeen olevan yli 90% suoja ennen tehostetta) ja samoin kohonneen riskin ihmisryhmistä. Taisi olla just eilen uutinen, että Suomessa kuoli 25 alle 60 vuotiasta koronaan. Toki alle 60 vuotiaille tauti voi tuoda erittäin pahoja jälkitauteja/oireita, eli en missään tapauksessa halua vähätellä virusta edes nyt, kun rokotukset ovat edistyneet, jopa ennustettani (ei virallinen, mutta selvästi kuitenkin järkevämpi kuin konserniäijän höpinä) nopeammin.
Sitten yleisesti tässä topikissa on tullut tavaksi dissata toisen mielipiteitä/kirjoittamaa kyseenalaisin tavoin. Harvoin kuitenkin törmää ihan noin puhtaaseen paskanpuhumiseen kuin sun tapauksessa, eli lopeta se.

Kreikka haluaa kovasti turisteja maahansa. Itse en kyllä mene, koronatilanne on siellä kehno ja rajoitukset ankaria. Ei se lomalta ainakaan pohjoismaisella mittapuulla tuntuisi.

Sitten yleisesti tässä topikissa on tullut tavaksi dissata toisen mielipiteitä/kirjoittamaa kyseenalaisin tavoin. Harvoin kuitenkin törmää ihan noin puhtaaseen paskanpuhumiseen kuin sun tapauksessa, eli lopeta se.
