Punk in Finland

Suburban Voicen arvio:

A blending (sheesh, sounds like I'm talking about coffee) of different styles but this is a melodic sound with elements of Swedish and Japanese hardcore and the occasionally epic propensity. The guitars aren't tuned that low so things don't collapse under their own weight. When the compositions are kept brief and throttling, it's the best display of this Finnish band's power. Katri has a commanding vocal presence--sandpaper rough but not one dimensional. There's the occasional instance of dreaded snare slam taking a shortcut to speed things up but that hinders more than helps. Definitely not a light-hearted affair--the lyrical translations mention daily struggles, pain "within me that cuts deep," etc. "The sky is filled with dark clouds" from the song with the English title "Rain" kind of sums thing up. Nothing really bogs down to a crawl and the band's inherent power is effectively conveyed. Might be a little somber for fans of the raw/aggressive Scandi-core.

I was little worried by the melodic intro, but RAKKAUS have lost none of their harshness on their first full-lenght. They have ventured into slightly more expansive songwriting compared to their earlier EPs, but the new songs are really successful. In fact, "Syvää unta" may be my favourite RAKKAUS song to date. The close to blasting drums and the sick syncopation on the vocal line are fucking killer. Unlike a lot of Finnish bands, they don't really fit in the mold of traditional Finnish hardcore. I would say they have more in common with US bands. DETESTATION with fastcore parts? Whatever the mix of influences, they fucking rip this LP. Well done.

RAKKAUS JOKAINEN PAIVA ON TAISTELUA LP
5 kids from Finland get together in the spring of 2003 with the intention of staving off boredom by playing noisy fast hardcore. Fast forward 6 years, RAKKAUS went from a time killer for some kids into a touring band (along with Finland, played Means To an End Fest on 09 and plans another Euro tour in ‘10) churning out a demo two seven inches and their new full length LP JOKAINEN PAIVA ON TAISTELUA. This record is one of my favorites from 09. There’s an emotional intensity to the lyrics that makes this record stand out against all the anti-war, anti-capital songs out there….don’t get me wrong I love them too but there is something in the lyrics on this record that are way more personal than a lot of the music coming from the kids today. The music and lyrics combine perfectly for a good solid punk record, mixing punk and crust, it’s fast, angry, loud and punk as fuck. Think Detestation had a baby with Imperial Leather. (stinkbot)

Rakkaus - Jokainen päivä on taistelua (Tom Sundberg)

Rakkaus on debyyttiälppärillään terävöittänyt crust-mausteista hc-kaahaustaan todella vaikuttavaksi ja iskeväksi paketiksi. Armottoman, blast-beateja kaihtamattoman piiskauksen ja Katrin äkäisen ulosannin rinnalle ovat yhä vahvemmin astuneet melodista särmää kokonaisuuteen tuovat kitaraharmoniat. Jäljet johtavat nyt useamman biisin kohdalla Portlandin kautta Japanin sylttytehtaille, mutta sekaan mahtuu myös vanhaa kunnon kasikakkosta ja jopa heviä. Tunnelmaltaan kappaleet eivät ole niin sysimustan apokalyptisiä kuin voisi lohduttomien lyriikoiden perusteella kuvitella. Musiikista huokuu, jos ei suoranaisesti kauneutta klassisessa mielessä, eräänlaista eeppistä kaihoa ja väkevää intohimoa, joka käy oivallisesti yhteen bändin nimivalinnan kanssa.
