Kevin Smith worked in the store where they shot the film. They shot for 21 straight nights. He would clock in at 6am and finish at 11pm. They would then shoot till 4am, after which he would try to grab an hour or two's sleep before getting ready to go back to work.

Kevin Smith, a keen comic book fan, sold a large part of his collection to help fund this film. He has since been able to buy most of them back.

The film's shoestring budget is part of the reason it was shot in black and white. A number of different types of lighting were used, and this would have required a lot of post production to resolve issues related to the varying color temperatures. With black and white, this isn't a problem.

Clerks is loosely based on "The Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri hence the name of the protagonist, Dante Hicks. Also, there are nine breaks in the movie to represent the nine rings of hell.

Jason Reitman has said that this film inspired his desire to be a filmmaker. Reitman later told Kevin Smith this, which lead Smith to jokingly quip, "You're the son of Ivan Reitman. You grew up on the sets of Ghostbusters (1984), and Stripes (1981). It took ME to let you know that you can be a director?".

Delicatessen was the first full film made by Caro and Jeunet, but it was actually planned after La cité des enfants perdus (1995) was refused, because "The City" was too expensive for the, at the time, unknown directors to assume. For that reason, Delicatessen's budget was cut VERY tight, with a very restricted set, many friends and family of both directors appearing in the cast, and most props being actually old scavenged stuff

When the film picked up the gold award at the Tokyo international film festival, Alan Parker stood up and clapped like an enthusiastic circus seal.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet got the idea for a cannibal butcher when living in an apartment above a butcher's shop. Each morning at 7am he would hear the metallic clash of knives and a voice shout, "Chop chop!" His girlfriend said he was carving up the neighbors, and it would be their turn next week.

Philip Seymour Hoffman based his character (Allen) off of Ralph Reed; the founder of the Christian Coalition, and a Republican politician. During a run in with Ralph, he told Philip that his favorite movie was Happiness. Little did Ralph know, he was Allen.

Premiere voted this movie as one of "The 25 Most Dangerous Movies".

Jack Black was considered for the role of Allen.

In James Cagney's autobiography, he says that Horst Buchholz was the only actor he really hated working with because he was uncooperative and tried all kinds of scene-stealing moves, which Cagney depended on Billy Wilder to correct. Had Wilder not firmly directed Buchholz, Cagney said that he "was going to knock Buchholz on his ass, which at several points I would have been very happy to do".

Joan Crawford (then on the board of PepsiCo) ( ) telephoned director Billy Wilder to protest the movie's Coca-Cola connection. Wilder then added a final scene in which James Cagney buys four bottles of Coke from a vending machine. The last bottle out of the machine isn't Coke but another brand . . . Pepsi.

James Cagney had such a negative experience making this picture that he retired from films for 20 years until his cameo in Ragtime (1981).

The film recorded a loss of $1.6 million. It didn't do well at either the U.S. or German box office because the story felt much more sinister in 1961 when the Berlin Wall was erected.

The film's failure at the box office kept Jacques Tati in debt for several years.

The elaborate set of Tativille had its own roads, electrical systems and - in one of the office buildings - a fully working elevator.

For the restaurant sequence, Jacques Tati had to work out each part and direct each character separately. It took him seven weeks to shoot it. First he'd set up all the different movements in the background, then he'd set up each action in the foreground, looking through the lens while composing each shot so he could see everything at once. He had to shoot it all in sequence.

According to Jacques Tati, the star of the film is the decor.

One reason for the film's commercial failure may have been Jacques Tati's insistence that the film be limited to those theatres equipped with 70 mm projectors and stereophonic sound (he refused to provide a 35 mm version for smaller theatres). For another, audiences worldwide had come to love Tati's films for the character of M. Hulot; his reduction to an intermittent, occasionally supporting role in the new Tati film came as a disappointment to many (Tati himself lampooned the phenomenon in an early scene when a rain-coated pedestrian whose back is turned to the audience is mistakenly hailed as Hulot). Others disliked its nearly plotless story line, while those who only saw a single showing frequently missed the intricate, sometimes simultaneous comic sight gags performed in the various group scenes. A final reason for the film's poor reception may have been its release date; while the film's satire of modern life may have been cutting-edge when first conceptualized in 1959, by the end of 1967 such themes were old-hat to film audiences.
