Du précédent Garden of Worm j'avais conservé l'impression d'une chose ingrate et incompréhensible à s'imposer, et avec votre permission je n'y suis pas retourné pour ramener en guise de lettre de marque des pourquoi et des comment plus spécifiques. Disons, d'après l'odeur de la trace refroidie : une chose qui chevrote avec assurément quelque démon dans le poitrail qui la fouaille, mais un alors dont les imprécations, les sortilèges et les croyances nous traversent comme aussi dépourvus de corps qu'ils le sont de grâce. Un truc clairement à fond dans son monde, pour le dire vulgairement, mais seul là-bas, tout aussi sûrement.

Et d'une certaine façon, c'est toujours le cas. Car si, comme le dit la fiche promo, Garden of Worm a mis tarpin de psyché, de prog et autres vieilleries encore plus archaïques et ringardes que son trad doom d'influence première dans son vin cette fois, et ce sans aucune futile discrétion, c'est pourtant tout du long la très troublante étrangeté fantomatique qui, du moins imagine-t-on, révèle à coup sûr la présence du monde de l'esprit, de la magie ou des extra-terrestres comme on préfère - que l'on ressent devant Idle Stones, et la conviction d'être en présence de tout autre chose qu'un groupe de prog psyché aussi orthodoxe que sa musique semble le dire placidement : un groupe tout à fait non pareil et seul dans sa pratique. Au point que même ce que je sais de plus singulier dans la branche, à savoir la veine récente de Pombagira et la série de maxis de Burning Saviours, en paraît en comparaison mondain, trivial, terrestre ; qu'on irait presque convoquer plutôt l'altérité de Bardo Pond, comme seul parent et plutôt que l'humeur pastorale de Giant Squid ou Grayceon, pour qualifier ces récurrents accès d'acidité stridulante, bourdonnante et stupéfiée... ne s'agissait-il ici d'autre chose encore, avec toujours en arrière-plan ces douces teintes délavées, de jasmin et de lichen, et cette paisible foi dans les aubes d'été à venir.

Ailleurs, ou dans un autre temps ; médiéval non tant par d'ostensibles tournures sonores, que par une atmosphère, presque au sens propre, résolument lointaine, énigmatique, spectrale, perdue dans les couleurs brumeuses d'un monde féérique inquiétant pour l'auditeur qui s'y sent aussi étranger et intrus qu'un spectateur accidentel. Ce que j'aurais bien moins de peine à décrire en utilisant les deux simples mots d'Arthur Machen, en somme - qu'on imagine donc si je fus surpris d'apprendre qu'un de ces musiciens joue chez Seremonia. C'est ce qui dira encore le mieux la labilité, la fragilité de cette sensation mêlée, voire inextricablement liée, de peur panique mais diffuse, et d'être baigné, sous la trame d'un décor qui a tous les atours du familier, du quotidien, du rassurant, dans un univers tout tissé d'une bienveillance antique et cosmique, ainsi qu'au milieu d'un troupeau de mille chevreaux blancs. Tandis qu'au loin devant les Garden of Worm errent battant les buissons, paraissant par moments flotter à travers les graminées, et apostrophant les passereaux comme s'ils étaient des esprits puissants, leurs voix tintant étrangement dans les grêles et aigrelettes odes qu'ils leur chantent avec une méticuleuse dévotion, sur les sentiers de ce comté reculé et oublié de tous qu'ils ont trouvé à force de vagabonder aux franges des cartes de la cambrousse anglaise, après les moellons des derniers cottages en ruine et les Houses of the Holy. Comme une sorte d'Avalon dont les princes seraient les mulots et les sauterelles.

Bienvenue dans le jardin du doom.

Tämä The Sludgelordin arvio kiteytti monta ihan oleellista asiaa levystä:

A Finnish progressive doom trio, named after a King Crimson song, signed to the mighty Svart records? These three factors fulfil some of my key requirements for a great record and are enough to give me sky-high expectations of Garden of Worm’s second album “Idle Stones”. Within a couple of listens I felt that these expectations had been met, but in a way I totally wasn’t expecting.

The whole retro occult doom vibe is incredibly popular at the moment so I had some minor misgivings before listening to “Idle Stones” that maybe Garden of Worm would be another hollow band jumping on the bandwagon. Thankfully these doubts proved to be completely unfounded as the band have crafted something very odd and captivating here.

Managing to be heavy without relying on mountains of distortion, the entire album has a hazy, nocturnal atmosphere evocative of the strangeness of the early hours when night is turning into morning but darkness still prevails. Opener “Fleeting are the Days of Man” begins proceedings in relatively brief and conventional fashion, sounding like a drowsy, slightly less Sabbath-fixated Witchcraft. The band then start to voyage into weirder more progressive territory with the ten minutes of “Summer’s Isle”. Covering dark, folk-tinged rock, driving, up-tempo riffing and passages of ecstatic, freeform psychedelic rock it makes for quite a ride. Although the traditional progressive elements of long songs covering different sections, moods and tempos are all present here, Garden of Worm’s execution makes them sound worlds apart from what you would expect. There is no pomp here; the overall sound is very lean and raw, favouring untamed improvisational soloing that teeters on the edge of chaos over virtuoso excess.

“Desertshore” follows and brings to mind the spaced-out, hard rock of the massively underrated Virginia trio, Pontiak, setting the scene for the massive 20 minute finale of “The Sleeper including Being Is More Than Life” (Maximum prog points for that title too). Opening with the tried and tested doom staple of a distant tolling bell, the band lurch into an eerie, funereal dirge reminiscent of Pallbearer’s “Foreigner” stripped of its volume but with its otherworldly atmosphere amplified.

“Idle Stones” is a highly impressive release from Garden of Worm, managing to sound retro while bringing something vital and modern to create something quite unique. This is something few bands manage to pull off and should hopefully see them win an army of converts in 2015.

Tampere, Finland, trio Garden of Worm will release their second album, Idle Stones (review here), via Svart Records on March 6. It is a much different sort of outing than their 2010 self-titled Shadow Kingdom debut (review here), which was gruffer in its tone and more traditional overall, and is comprised of four tracks split easily into two vinyl sides, each comprised of a shorter and a longer piece, totaling about 42 minutes. The focus this time around seems to be more geared toward space than distorted riffing, and while Idle Stones bears considerable weight tonally and emotionally, it’s the latter that gives opener “Fleeting are the Days of Man” (5:35), “Summer’s Isle” (10:13), “Desertshore” (7:01) and “The Sleeper Including Being is More than Life” (19:49) their full breadth. Five years after an impressive debut, Garden of Worm breathe life into a staid sound and embark on engaging explorations of form that feel not hindered by genre constraints but enhanced by them. You can’t know which lines to cross without first knowing where they are.

Today I have the extreme pleasure of hosting “Summer’s Isle Including Caravan” for streaming ahead of the LP’s release. As the title-hints, it’s a two-parter, and what impresses most about it is the flow from one segment to the next. Garden of Worm – guitarist/vocalist EJ Taipale, bassist/vocalist SJ Harju and drummer JM Suvanto — set up a strong sense of atmosphere throughout Idle Stones‘ first three songs, and the last one which follows makes the most of the spaciousness provided. Following a morose, understated opening that’s deceptively heavy, Taipale, Harju and Suvanto move into a wash of noise that unfolds gradually, gracefully, into a pulsating space rock jam, a psychedelic freakout emerging like a multicolored mushroom from a forest floor. The sound swells and consumes, but it’s not the end.

Over on side B, the dual-vocal thrust of “Desertshore” sets the table for 20-minute closer “The Sleeper Including Being is More than Living” which expands the ideas of “Summer’s Isle Including Caravan” even further, moving from doomly vibing into a psych jam that, just before the 17-minute mark, drops out and Suvanto‘s ride cymbal eases the way back into a kind of epilogue reprise of the song’s earlier melancholy, this time using it as the launch point for what becomes a kind of summary of the piece in its entirety — another mini-freakout building to a head and is brought to a minimalist, contemplative conclusion. It makes a worthy focal point for Idle Stones, but I won’t take away from the achievement of the album as a whole either, whether it’s the cohesive introduction the album is given on “Fleeting are the Days of Man” or the subtle ritualism in “Summer’s Isle Including Caravan” that, as a preface to the closer, boldly rips itself to shreds in a more concise fit of improv-sounding noise. There are those who see doom and heavy rock like church and state, as though they couldn’t or shouldn’t occupy the same ideals. Garden of Worm cut to the root influence and create something of their own from it that is neither and both at the same time, and their command and poise as Idle Stones plays out its progressive sprawl is not to be discounted.

Garden of Wormin debyytistä tokaisin, että tässä on doom-levy, jota voi kuunnella myös kesällä. Nyt viisi vuotta myöhemmin kesä on vieläkin läsnä, mutta samalla yhtyeen puutarha on villiintynyt reheväksi metsiköksi, joka ei enää taivu puhtaasti doom metalin linjastoihin. Nyt kyse on ikimetsästä, joka kiehtoo monimuotoisuudellaan.

Ei yhtyeen ensilevytyskään mikään perinteisen doom metalin stereotyyppi ollut, mutta Idle Stonesilla Garden of Worm kurottaa vieläkin laajemmalle. Fleeting are the Days of Men on vielä varsin selkeärajainen, laiskanrennosti junnaava tuomiojulistus, mutta seuraavat kappaleet ovat kuin muinaisia raunioita pitkin kiipeäviä köynnöksiä pitkine mittoineen ja monine käänteineen. Soundeja myöten yhtyeen perusolemus on samaan aikaan muheva ja kukkaisa. Bändi ei pyri olemaan se kaikkein raskain ja synkin bändi, mutta vaakakupissa painavatkin ilmavuus, mietiskelevyys ja haikeus, jotka ovat kaikki erittäin vahvoja tunnetiloja.

Musiikillisesti Idle Stones nojaa toisaalta vanhaan doom metaliin ja toisaalta vanhaan progeen. Improvisaatiolla tuntuu olleen vahva osuus sävellystyössä, mutta miksikään instrumenttitaiteiluksi tai sisäänpäinkääntyneeksi kikkailuksi ei levy käänny. Tukirankojen päälle rakennetaan mielenkiintoisia kuviointeja, jotka etenkin Summer’s Islessa hurmaavat kuulijan lähes pakahtumiseen asti, niin rauhassa kuin rockissa. Desertshore on hieman yksioikoisempi ja siksi etäisempi tapaus, mutta kultakantaan palataan päätöskappaleessa. Lähes kaksikymmentä minuuttia olisi pitkä mitta kappaleelle levyllä kuin levyllä, mutta niin vain Garden of Worm pystyy muovaamaan meditatiivisesta junnauksestaan vahvaa musiikinvirtaa, joka vie yli tasankojen, vuorien ja hautausmaiden. Lopussa käännytään vielä ruotsalaisen Baby Grandmothersin viipyilevän Being is more then Lifen (1968) puoleen, mutta Garden of Wormin oma henki kuultaa tästäkin läpi.

Kuten sanottua, Idle Stones elää ja hengittää tuotantonsakin kautta. Lyijynraskas kitarasoundi ei ole tavoiteltava asia, vaan Garden of Worm tähtää leijuvaan ja jollain tapaa läpinäkyvään lopputulokseen: kuin katselisi syysauringon hailakkaa valoa varisevan lehtisateen läpi. Kehitystä taas näkyy soiton monimuotoisuuden lisäksi laulusuorituksissa. S.J. Harju kantaa vahvasti mutta myös pehmeästi pääroolin, mutta E.J. Taipale tuo toimivaa taustatukea. Kun mukaan otetaan vielä Marja Pasasen hienovaraiset vierailut siellä ja täällä, on kokonaisuus kohdillaan.

Idle Stonesin hitaus ja rauhallisuus on käsinkosketeltavaa. Tällä tavoin Garden of Worm pitää juurensa vielä kiinni doom metalin maaperässä. Samalla kuitenkin yhtye kasvattaa aivan omaa lajiaan olevan puun, jonka lehdissä kiiltävät niin menetyksen harmaanruskea lopullisuus kuin vaaleanvihreä toivo tulevasta. Yksityiskohtia, oksanreikiä, silmuja ja sammaltuppoja on paljon, mutta ne luovat lopulta yhden suuren organismin, joka hengittää vapaasti ja ilman rajoituksia. Näin ollen Idle Stones on yksi alkuvuoden tunnepitoisimpia kuuntelukokemuksia.
