The Iconoclast unmasked: the man behind far-right YouTube channel

Former media student Daniel Atkinson used video-sharing platform to influence new generation of rightwing activists

He is the anonymous architect behind one of the most successful and toxic British far-right YouTube channels, responsible for disseminating racist, Islamophobic and antisemitic material. For years the individual known as The Iconoclast has managed to protect his identity despite amassing nearly 21m views and more than 218,000 subscribers.

However the Observer can reveal that the figure behind one of the biggest far-right content producers in the UK – and the movement’s most prominent anonymous account – is a former media student called Daniel Atkinson.

Campaigners said the unmasking of Atkinson was important because he is emblematic of the latest manifestation of the far right.

They said it is highly likely his widely disseminated racist views influenced some far-right supporters who clashed with police in central London last weekend.

The far-right’s influence has traditionally been consolidated within formal groups and political parties such as the British National Party and English Defence League (EDL). Now, however, its most prominent figures more closely resemble social media influencers such as Atkinson and those who have opted to be identified, for example rightwing commentator Katie Hopkins and far-right YouTuber Paul Joseph Watson, also a senior editor at the conspiracy theory website Infowars. The former leader of the EDL, Tommy Robinson, is another far-right figure who now prefers to produce online content than belong to a particular organisation.

After the Observer asked YouTube why it continued to host The Iconoclast, the platform finally moved to close a channel which has operated since 2016 and repeatedly been accused of hate speech. A YouTube spokesperson said: “We share a deep concern and responsibility in protecting the community against hate speech and do not want our platform used for harm. Due to repeated violations of our policies, we have terminated The Iconoclast channel.”

Not only had Atkinson’s YouTube channel and magazine steadily attracted an international audience over the years but it also provided a platform for a number of high-profile and extreme figures on the global far right.

Among these are US writer Brittany Pettibone, who views immigration as “white genocide” and in 2018 was banned from entering Britain. Another is antisemitic white supremacist Colin Robertson – aka Millennial Woes – who has described himself as “pro-slavery” and demanded the torpedoing of refugee boats.

On Friday night anti-fascist groups celebrated the removal of one of the most divisive channels on YouTube. Gregory Davis, researcher at anti-extremism pressure group Hope Not Hate said: “The Iconoclast is the perfect example of the threat posed by the modern far-right. It operated online and anonymously and outside of any formal far-right organisation but managing to reach huge numbers of people around the world.”

Extreme even by the standards of most far-right YouTubers, Atkinson actively promoted the idea of “voluntary repatriation” for the UK’s minority ethnic population. In a video uploaded to YouTube in April, he showed clips of an interview with Enoch Powell talking about measures that could encourage voluntary repatriation. Atkinson agreed, saying they would “create an atmosphere that may make leaving Britain seem a more attractive option”.

Such views are similar to those expressed by Generation Identity, a far-right racial separatist group that Atkinson has promoted on his channel and whose ideology is said by some to have inspired the mass shooter in the Christchurch mosque attack, which killed 51 people in March 2019.

Another video on The Iconoclast, published on 5 April and attracting more than 50,000 views, reveals Atkinson’s dismay at suggestions that Rishi Sunak, the Southampton-born chancellor of the exchequer, may be the next prime minister.

“He [Sunak] isn’t British. He is Indian. He can never be British beyond a civic sense. He can never have a genetic connection to the history of this country. So how can he do what’s best for us?” said Atkinson.

Uncovering Atkinson’s identity involved forensic analysis of his social media output, including repeated usernames, profile pictures, throwaway comments that corroborated biographical details shared in his YouTube videos and undeleted accounts. One closed TikTok account linked to Atkinson has a profile blurb that simply states: “I’m racist.”

YouTube has intervened on a number of occasions, removing one video from Atkinson’s channel as recently as 4 June. The video made several racist statements about black people and the Black Lives Matter protests, including one claim that the demonstrations proved Enoch Powell was right to say that the “black man will have the whip hand over the white man”.

Last August his YouTube account was temporarily removed for violating the platform’s guidelines along with prominent anti-Islamic extremist Martin Sellner, who has also been banned from the UK. However, both were reinstated with no apparent explanation from YouTube other than apparently that it had been “the wrong call”, a decision that caused global controversy. Days earlier, YouTube’s chief executive said it had to be open to hosting “controversial” ideas.

Commenting after YouTube had terminated his channel, Atkinson said: “As it stands, your article will paint me in a certain light, and the video samples you have chosen will be the only representation of my wider work, which the public can no longer access.”

US soldier plotted with neo-Nazi group to attack own unit, indictment says

Ethan Melzer who was charged with conspiring and attempting to murder US nationals ‘was the enemy within’

A US Army soldier was plotting with a British occultist neo-Nazi group to attack and kill members of his own military unit, according to a newly unsealed indictment by the Department of Justice.

Ethan Melzer, a 22-year old army private from Louisville, Kentucky, has been charged with conspiring and attempting to murder US nationals, conspiring and attempting to murder military service members, providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists, and conspiring to murder and maim in a foreign country, the DoJ announced on Monday.

“As alleged, Ethan Melzer, a private in the US Army, was the enemy within,” said acting US attorney for the southern district of New York, Audrey Strauss, in a statement.

“Melzer allegedly attempted to orchestrate a murderous ambush on his own unit by unlawfully revealing its location, strength, and armaments to a neo-Nazi, anarchist, white supremacist group.

Federal prosecutor Strauss succeeded Geoffrey Berman in the office over the weekend, after Berman was pushed out by the US attorney general, Bill Barr, and Donald Trump.

Melzer was a member of the Order of the Nine Angles (O9A), a group whose members have been involved with violence and murders, according to the DoJ. “Members and associates of O9A have espoused violent, neo-Nazi, anti-Semitic, and Satanic beliefs, and have expressed admiration for both Nazis, such as Adolf Hitler, and Islamic jihadists, such as Osama Bin Laden,” according to the DoJ.

O9A originated as a fringe group in the UK in the 1960s and has gained influence in recent years among violent neo-Nazi and white nationalist groups, according to a report by Hope not Hate. In March, Hope Not Hate called on the British Home Office to ban the group.

Four UK teenagers with ties to O9A have been jailed for terror offenses in the past year, according to the BBC, and one was convicted of planning a terrorist attack.

The charges allege the soldier gave information about US troops stationed overseas to O9A.

The US advocacy group, the Southern Poverty Law Center, has described the group as an “occult neo-Nazi” organization, and British lawmakers have called for the group, which was founded there, to be banned, according to an NBC report.

Europol: Äärioikeiston terrorismi leviää globaalisti – terrorismin tutkijan mielestä jihadistien ja äärioikeiston maailmankuvat muistuttavat toisiaan

Saksan poliisin erikoisjoukot saattoivat 2.6.2019 Karlsruhessa äärioikeistoaktivistia, joka myöhemmin oikeudessa tunnusti surmanneensa Kasselin maaherran.

Maaliskuussa 2019 Uuden-Seelannin Christchurchissa nuori australialainen mies hyökkäsi kahteen moskeijaan ja tappoi 51 ihmistä. Tämä käynnisti ilmiön, joka Euroopan poliisiviraston Europolin mielestä kertoo äärioikeistolaisen terrorismin toimintatavasta: iskusta tuli esimerkki, jota alettiin kopioida ympäri maailman.

Seuraavana päivänä Britannian Surreyssä viisikymppinen mies puukotti bulgarialaisen nuoren. Huhtikuussa nuori mies Yhdysvaltain Passoverissa hyökkäsi moskeijaan. Elokuussa El Pasossa nuori mies hyökkäsi supermarketiin.

Muutamaa päivää myöhemmin norjalainen nuori mies tappoi sisarpuolensa ja yritti hyökätä islamilaiseen keskukseen. Lokakuussa Puolan Varsovassa kaksi miestä otettiin kiinni heidän suunniteltuaan terrori-iskua muslimeja vastaan.



Kaikkien iskujen tekijät tai suunnittelijat olivat Europolin tuoreen terrorismiraportin mukaan ottaneet vaikutteita Christchurchin hyökkääjältä. Tämä taas ihaili Norjan Utöjan vuoden 2011 iskua.

– Elementti, joka herättää huolta, on globaali mittakaava, jonka tämä ideologia on saamassa. Yksi väkivaltainen teko Christchurchissa herättää kopioivia tekoja Euroopassa tai Yhdysvalloissa, Ulkopoliittisen instituutin terrorismiin erikoistunut vanhempi tutkija Teemu Tammikko sanoo.

Tekoja on kuitenkin vaikea ennakoida, koska usein ääritekoja tekevät eivät ole aktiivisia järjestöjen jäseniä vaan ideologiasta kiinnostuneita yksittäisiä henkilöitä.

Jihadismi on suurin uhka, vaikka aalto on madaltunut
Euroopan poliisivirasto Europol on tilastoinut terroritekoja vuodesta 2007. Tällä viikolla julkaistun Europolin raportin mukaan(siirryt toiseen palveluun) suunta on laskeva: terrorismi on vähentynyt. Jihadistisessa terrorismissa on nähty aalto, joka on tasaantunut. Nyt pientä nousua on väkivaltaisten poliittisten ääriliikkeiden iskuissa.

Tilastojen mukaan terrori-iskuissa kuoli Euroopassa vuonna 2019 kymmenen henkilöä ja loukkaantui 27. Terrorismiksi rekisteriin kirjatuista iskuista lähes kaikki kuolemat tai loukkaantumiset johtuivat jihadistien iskuista.

– Jihadismi on edelleen suurin uhka, Tammikko summaa.

Ideologian pääsuuntaukset yllyttävät suoraan tappamaan länsimaalaisia, tutkija kuvaa.



Jihadismin uhka ei ole ohi, sanoo myös Poliisihallituksen poliisitarkastaja Timo Kilpeläinen. Kilpeläinen vastaa terrorismin ja ääriliikkeiden torjunnasta.

Radikaali-islamilainen terrorismi tappaa ihmisiä Lähi-idässä, Afrikassa ja Aasiassa. Ainakin hetkellisesti sitä on kuitenkin saatu painettua Euroopassa alemmas.

– Jihadististen toimijoiden elintila on kaventunut konfliktialueella ja siksi heijastusvaikutukset Eurooppaan ovat olleet vähäisemmät, Kilpeläinen sanoo.

Euroopan isot terrori-iskut viime vuosina ovat saaneet viranomaiset kiinnittämään paljon huomiota juuri jihadistiseen terrorismiin, ja iskuja on opittu estämään. Europolin mukaan viime vuonna iskuja estettiin enemmän kuin niitä tapahtui. Terrorismista epäiltyjä on myös saatu vangittua – viime vuonna jihadistisesta terrorismista pidätettiin yli 400 henkilöä.

Suomi: Kaikki ääriajattelu voi johtaa terrorismiin
Samaan aikaan muu ääriajattelu on jäänyt vähemmälle huomiolle, eikä sitä välttämättä tunnisteta terrorismiksi. EU-puheenjohtajakaudellaan Suomi muistutti muita EU-maita, että kaikki ääriajattelu voi tuottaa terrorismia.

Viime vuoden terrorismitilastoissa määrällisesti isoin ryhmä ovat separatistien terroriteot. Niiden määrä on vähentynyt vuosista, jolloin esimerkiksi baskiterroristit olivat aktiivisia. Viime vuonna etnonationalistista tai separatistista terroria tekivät etenkin pohjoisirlantilaiset ja PKK:n kurdiaktivistit.

Äärivasemmistolaiset tai anarkistiset teot ovat lisääntyneet lievästi. Terrorismiksi rekisteröidyt teot tapahtuivat kaikki Italiassa, Espanjassa ja Kreikassa.

Myös äärivasemmistolaisella terrorismilla on poliisin mukaan saatu aikaan mittavaa vahinkoa. Sitä kuitenkin aiheutetaan usein viranomaisille, instituutioille tai omaisuudelle, ei yleensä siviileille.

– Sen sijaan jihadistisessa ja äärioikeistolaisessa terrorismissa pyritään aatteella oikeuttamaan iskut ja vahingot, jotka kohdistuvat sivullisiin tai pehmeisiin kohteisiin kuten joukkoliikenneasemiin tai ihmisten kokoontumispaikoille, Kilpeläinen sanoo.

Tutkija: Äärioikeiston terrorin tunnistamisessa haparoidaan
Europolin mukaan äärioikeistolaiset ja jihadistiset terroristit haluavat herättää pelkoa, äärioikeistolaiset haluavat myös kohdistaa vihaa vähemmistöihin.

– Jihadistisen terrorin tilastot tuovat esiin, mutta äärioikeiston terrorin tunnistamisessa haparoidaan, tutkija Teemu Tammikko arvioi.

Sisäministeriössä, missä väkivaltaisia ääriliikkeitä myös seurataan, arvioidaan terrorismin kehittyneen nopeammin kuin terrorismin määritelmän.

Tilastoissa äärioikeistolaisen terrorin määrä on kasvanut lievästi mutta on yhä alhainen.

Tilastot eivät kerro kaikkea. Esimerkiksi viime vuonna Saksassa tapahtuneita Kasselin maaherran surmaa ja Hallen synagogaiskua ei Saksan lain mukaan pidetty terrorismina eivätkä ne tilastoissa näy terroritekoina, vaikka esimerkiksi Europol nostaa ne esiin äärioikeistolaisen terrorismin yhteydessä.

Poliisi: Äärioikeistolaisen terrorin uhka on selkeästi voimistunut länsimaissa
Euroopan poliisiviraston raportissa oikeistoekstremismi kuitenkin nähdään trendiksi, joka kehittyy nopeasti esimerkiksi maailmanlaajuisten tietoverkkojen avulla. Suomalainen poliisi ja tutkija pitävät havaintoa todenmukaisena.

– Äärioikeistolaisessa genressä on selkeää ja voimakasta liikehdintää: siellä tapahtuu paljon lievemmän poliittisen väkivallan muotoja kuten rasistisia pahoinpitelyjä. On iskuja vastaanottokeskuksiin ja turvapaikanhakijoita kohtaan, Tammikko sanoo.

– Selkeästi äärioikeistolaisen terrorin uhka on voimistunut länsimaissa, se näkyy useina vakavina iskuina tai iskuyrityksinä viimeisen reilun vuoden aikana. Suomessa tällaisia vakavia väkivallantekoja ei onneksi ole vielä ilmennyt, poliisitarkastaja Timo Kilpeläinen sanoo.

Äärioikeiston voimistumista pidetään uhkana myös Yhdysvalloissa. CSIS-ajatushautomon tuore raportti (siirryt toiseen palveluun)kertoo, että Yhdysvalloissa viime vuonna kaksi kolmannesta terroriteoista oli "valkoisen ylivallan" kannattajien tekemiä. Tutkijat arvioivat, että Yhdysvalloissa äärioikeistolaiset terroristit muodostavat suurimman uhkan, mutta myös anarkistit ja jihadistit ovat aktiivisia.

Tutkija Teemu Tammikon mukaan äärioikeistolainen ideologia ei kuitenkaan ole vielä väkivaltaan yllyttämisessä niin "ääripäässä" kuin jihadistinen terrori, eikä se ole yhtä järjestäytynyttä.

Äärikonservatiivisuus yhdistää jihadisteja ja äärioikeistolaisia
Äärioikeistolaista ekstremismiä on ollut olemassa pitkään. Länsimaissa se käyttää nyt polttoaineenaan jihadismin nousua.

Vaikka toiminta ei ole kovin järjestäytynyttä, ideologiassa on yhtenäisiä piirteitä: viholliskuvan rakentamista, salaliittoteorioita, teknologiavainoharhaisuutta, mustavalkoista maailmankuvaa ja pelkoa "valkoisen rodun" häviämisestä, tutkija Tammikko luettelee.

Mutta tutkija tunnistaa yhteisiä arvoja myös äärioikeiston ja jihadistien maailmankuvissa: Molemmat liikkeet edustavat äärikonservatismia.

– Ne vastustavat globalisaatiota ja liberalismia. Seksuaalivähemmistöille ei haluta sallia samoja oikeuksia kuin muille ihmisille, ja naiset ovat miehiin nähden toisarvoisia, Tammikko sanoo.

Suhteessa uskontoon ja ihonväriin ideologiat kuitenkin eroavat toisistaan.

– Äärioikeistossa kristinusko nostetaan länsimaisen kulttuurin elementiksi, mutta silti valtaosa aktivisteista ei ole kovin uskovaisia. Jihadisteille muslimina oleminen on määrittävää riippumatta etnisestä taustasta tai ihonväristä, Tammikko sanoo.

Armed man roamed Justin Trudeau's grounds for 13 minutes after ramming gates

Canadian police confirm man had ‘several’ weapons and will face multiple charges

Canadian police say the armed man who rammed a truck through the gates of the prime minister’s residence was loose for 13 minutes before authorities finally spotted him.

Media reports have identified the intruder as Corey Hurren, a reservist in the Canadian Rangers, a branch of the military that typically operates in remote and coastal regions.

Hurren, who police have not yet formally identified, would be charged with multiple offences on 3 July, the deputy commissioner, Mike Duheme, said.

At about 6:30 in the morning, Hurren allegedly used a black pickup truck to ram the iron gates of Rideau Hall in Ottawa, the sprawling property where both the prime minister and governor general live.

Police say the truck was “disabled” after hitting the gates, but still travelled more than 100 meters into the grounds.

Security footage shows Hurren, carrying a gun, then move towards a rose garden, where he briefly took shelter. Police finally intercepted him as he approached a greenhouse at the far edge of the grounds. They said they were able to have “dialogue” with Hurren, lasting more than an hour and a half, before arresting him.

“There was never any danger to the prime minister and his family nor to the governor general, as neither were on the grounds at the time of the incident,” Duheme said. He said Hurren had several weapons with him.

Rideau Hall is the official residence of the governor general, Julie Payette, but Justin Trudeau and his family have been living at Rideau Cottage, in the grounds, during renovations to 24 Sussex, the prime minister’s official residence in Ottawa. According to maps of the area, Rideau Cottage is not far from the greenhouse.

Hurren, who is believed to have driven 1,900km (1,180 miles) from Manitoba to Ottawa, runs a small sausage-making business called GrindHouse Fine Foods. In May, he posted on Facebook that the coronavirus pandemic had taken a devastating toll on his business.

“I’m not sure what will be left of our economy, industries and businesses when this all ends,” he wrote.

An hour before entering the grounds of Rideau hall, GrindHouse Fine Foods posted a picture of an outdoor party that would occur after the lockdown, directing people to to look up “Event 201”. The reference was to a conspiracy theory that Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, was responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hurren’s company also posted a QAnon meme to Instagram in March, according to reporting from Vice News. “Has anyone else been following ‘Q’ and the ‘White Rabbit’ down the rabbit hole and how this all relates to the coronavirus/Covid-19 situation? Lots of coincidences in all these ‘Q’ posts if this turns out to be a ‘Nothingburger’,” the caption said.

Duheme said that after speaking to Hurren, police had a sense of his motives. He did not provide details and Hurren was not known to police at the time.

The 13 minutes in which an armed intruder roamed the grounds of the prime minister’s residence has raised questions about a major lapse in security. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police plans to conduct a review of the incident and increase security in the area.

Twitter user @GoldvesterCos shared a picture of the two men on Saturday, saying they were handing out anti-Semitic pamphlets and "Nazi political party" applications in Henryville, Indiana, a small town around 20 miles north of Louisville.

The picture shows the men, dressed in white shirts with armbands bearing the Nazi flag, standing by a table covered with papers.

The flag of Nazi Germany, which consists of a black swastika in a white circle over a red background, has become one of the most potent symbols of hate worldwide and has been adopted by white supremacists, especially neo-Nazis, since the end of the Second World War, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

"Nazis in Henryville, Indiana today," the tweet said. "Handing out anti-Semitic pamphlets and 'nazi political party' applications."

The flag of Nazi Germany, which consists of a black swastika in a white circle over a red background, has become one of the most potent symbols of hate worldwide and has been adopted by white supremacists, especially neo-Nazis, since the end of the Second World War, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
